GM 4106 rubber hinge replacement options

I think i remember reading someone replaced their rubber bay hinge material with stainless/aluminum piano hinge.

Anyone have a photo of how it was fitted and know the specs on the hinge used?

Did they remove the aluminum profile that held the rubber hinge material?

I don't have the contact information on the person that makes them, but they are easy to install. You just enlarge the center slot so the hinge will fit in. Then it slides down the slot. Hope somebody has the contact information.

McMaster-Carr has quite a large selection of piano hinges.

The nice thing about piano hinges is there is very little wasted material.  Piano hinges can be butted together and welded at the flanges for a seamless look.

On my 20' long single doors, I used two and a half of these hinges welded together:
Type 304 Ss Piano Hinge Without Holes, .090" Thick, 2" Width, 1/4" Pin Dia, 8'length

For 5' doors, I would probably still use the same size hinge.  Hinges that size are strong enough that you won't have to worry about them wearing out quickly and needing constant adjustment.

If you can find piano hinges that will slot in, like the rubber material, that is the way to go.  Rebuilding doors with piano hinges can take quite a lot of time and work to get right.

Sorry I do no have the contact info, but Ed Galant (something like that) makes stainless hinges for $10/each.  I have used three on my 5a doors but a bigger door might require four.

Those small GM door hinges are easily changed by one person so good quality rubber is best. Make sure the rubber is new.

Larger doors after the 4106 are another story and I recommend the ss ones for those.

I just did the two front bay doors on our 4905a with Eds stainless hinges and  we are very pleased with the results.
Ordering kits to do the four remaining doors.

The PO of my bus replaced the rubber on 2 bay doors and put hinges at each end.  When I get back to the bus I'll take some pics for you and post them.

Yes the hinges work in the Eagle as well and were easy to install while replacing the rubber.
