I finally got the bus all put back together and took it out for a drive.  It whined for 6 miles anytime I turned the wheel.  It did not blow any fluid out of the gasket, however.  I stopped at a park and overfilled the reservoir a bit, and I heard no more whining after that, but of course all the fluids were at operating temps by then.   Not sure where to go from here.  I think I'll leave it alone for a while.  I have a Webasto problem I have to figure out, so I'll switch to that maintenance next. I'll save that for a different post.

You probably have a bad roller or a worn cam ring on the pump David

good luck

Whining is just air being purged from the system.

It will also whine in cold weather when first used.

Don't mind the annoying noise part, but the ATF being blown out the reservoir lid gasket or the dipstick gasket when I attempt to turn the wheel is a mess around my alternator.
