My power steering fluid level looks to be a little low, it looks like motor oil definately not ATF how can I figure out what type of oil it is? I am not having any steering issues no leaks, Im just trying to figure out what to use if I ever need to add. How often should you replace the filter? Thanks.   John.

When I first got our bus, it needed PS fluid.  I used ATF because that's what I had always used in other vehicles.  I still do and I do not have any issues.  However, I believe that many use 30 weight motor oil.  I just have not felt the need to change over, but if you have motor oil in there, I would stick with it.

Goutoe,
I have an MCI 9 with a 6V96.
In the book it calls for 10 weight motor oil.
I couldn't find 10 W so I'm using 15W30 motor oil.
No problems for the past 12 years.

Mine uses 5W-30 for both hydraulic and power steer.

Just wish it was easier to check and add !!

Most of the transit authorities in the cities used hydraulic oil like the 303 just about anything will work as long it is non foaming oil

Depends on your PS system.

If it is original the manual will tell you.

4104 original uses Dextron.

My Sheppard conversion uses regular 10W-40 auto motor oil per the factory.

303 hyd oil is a universal type oil it even works in a Allison the ,15/40 is used because of the gear driven pump only reason Sheppard use it,Gus where do find the old Dexron for a 4104 power steering it hasn't been made in 20 years

You need a manual for this century about the Sheppard steering and oils mine shows over a 100 different ones including Dexron and  the HF32 (303) hyd oil

my steering gear is a sheppard it is not original equip. on my bus, I dont think it is hydralic oil. it looks more like motor oil, I think I will use a multi weight  motor oil non detergent, Actually I dont need to add much I guess I will give it a try and see what works best, thanks guys for your input.

When I had the Sheppard steering installed on my bus, I also had the box rebuilt-and the rebuilder suggested 15W-40. It whines a bit when cold, but works well. Good Luck, TomC

I have a few cases of old Dexron but I use newer when necessary, Dexron says it is all backward compatible.

My Sheppard is a very old model, not even made anymore and there are no parts available. The only way to renew it is to send to the factory and have a newer model made of it. Very discouraging pricewise.

Anyway, newer Sheppard models may use different oil than mine which calls for plain ole 10w-40 motor oil as per Sheppard's tech, Roy, at rmilne@rhsheppard.com, a really helpful guy.
