Hey has anyone ever changed a clutch out on a 74 GMC 4905? It's 8V71 with the Spicer 4 Speed.

I'm pretty mechanical, but new to the bus world, and wondering if you guys can inform me of any tips, tricks, or torque specs that I need to know?

Also does anyone have any suggestions on which clutch to use, and where I can locate the parts at the best prices?

I have a touring honkytonk trio based out of Austin TX, and I have done about 50,000 miles in vans for the past 4 years, and am trying to get this bus up and running so it can see the road again, and we can travel in comfort.

I've gotta replace the starter also, and a front airbag so if anyone knows tips, and sources on those items I would more than appreciate it.

If you wanna check out what my band is up to check us out at www.peeweemoore.com

I can't wait to dig into it, but would like to know what not to do before I do.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, welcome to the madness.   If you are going to be touring get towing insurance (good sam whatever...) as towing a bus costs as much or more than  many repairs.
You are going to need the manual, and do a thorough search on this site.  All the info you asked for  is in previous threads.  I haven't done my clutch yet but I know enough about it to say it is more complicated than a car clutch, and not just because it is heavier (an engine hoist will help).  Re the starter, make sure the ground/relay/"+" are all good before changing it.  Many no start problems on old buses are the electrics before the actual starter.
Air bags as well are covered in the forum fairly extensively.

Sir,
Discribe what is the problem with the clutch on your GMC P8M4905A. ???
When shifting,Clutch slipping or you can not get the transmission in to 1st gear with the engine running and clutch pedal depressed to the floor please advise us old P8M4905A owners.
We just might have a good idea or two you.
Also explain the problem that you are having with the starter.
Remember the engine in your coach is a left hand rotation and you must rebuild the starter or replace the starter with the proper left hand rotation starter.
Please Note one from a MCI or Eagle coach will not work as it's right hand rotation starter.
Yes I do speak P8M4905A I have owned a P8M4905A coach for many years and if properly maintained they are one of the better coaches to own. ;D
Also what is the serial number/vin on your coach P8M4905A-XXXX
