Clifford, thanks for the plug.  As I mentioned on the Eagle site, you don't hear much about generator fires, but they do happen.  Dan Lenz called me and gave me the owner's name.  I will call him and see if I can find out why the generator caught on fire.

Has anyone put their generator in a box that would be air tight if some flaps closed at the start of a fire? It seems a lot of conversions burn from generator fires, and it doesn't seem that impractical to put in some flaps with heat activated spring hinges that will close in the event of a fire. Sort of like the magnetically latched doors that swing shut on commercial elevators in the event of a fire, to keep the fire out of the elevator shaft. A fire in an air tight box should go out quickly I would think. Would this work?

They call them fusible links. When it gets hot enough the solder melts, the link seperates, and the spring closes the damper. Used in ventilation ducts,etc.

The problem I see is that we have to have air flow into the box, so we use the fan on the engine - or for a remote radiator, we use a blower.  I think it would take a heck of a flapper door to keep those fans from bringing in the very small amount of air it would take to sustain the fire.

Without some sort of detection system, the engine or fan would not be automatically shut off.

A person could rig a temperature switch in the compartment and build a relay system to shut the generator off or shut off the fan.  However, most of us have some sort of opening in the bottom of the box to exhaust the air out of the box.  Not sure you could seal that up to prevent all flow.

The other issue is auto-gen-start.  If you have that, and somehow have a way to stop the generator, it could be started again and the whole cycle would start all over again. 

We make sure we shut the generator down, disable the auto-gen-start and spray the compartment with a high performance suppression agent.

Isn't heat generated during the formation of rust which could lead to spontaneous  combustion?  Sorry Jim, but since we let you eagle guys slide on that one topic i thought i would make up for it here. ;D

John,

You will probably have to get it shipped to you. However, I don't believe that you will EVER regret spending a little money (it isn't all that much compared to a regular system).

Like I have said before, I sleep better, and I get in that bus with more ease, knowing we have his system.
