Crankshaft Damper - questions

When I put the second Series 60 in, I used the crankshaft damper from the original Series 60 engine (had magnets glued on it for an auxiliary tach).  Both are 12.7 engines.  I seem to have more vibration with this engine - especially at lower engine speeds.

So, two questions:

1)  Are crankshaft dampers interchangeable?

2)  Assuming that dampers go bad, how do you know when to replace?

Jim, the center rubber mounts can be exchanged from one engine to another but not the liquid fill that Detroit uses they won't even stand a dent on the housing

If you can't swap fluid dampers from one like engine to another, then would it be necessary to mark the damper / crankshaft position if you're replacing the seal?

I do Ken if replacing the collar other than that they just fit one way on the crankshaft and also watched the guys at Stewart and Stevenson do the same if the owner didn't want the new 500 dollar damper.
The dealers install new ones when they replace the bull gear on 60 series around 700,000 miles,I read some place where you change those every 3 years it is in the manual
