Fellows,

I just completed painting of my coach and still have the molding pieces and the rear doors to paint. These will be completed off of the coach in the next couple of weeks. I applied a Dupont Base/Clear material and I am very happy with the results. This paint was applied with the bus inside my shop and I have to say it turned out very well. A lot of work and hundreds of hours.

I have questions regarding what to do with the destination sign? It would be good to hear from those of you that had this sign on you bus and to hear what you did with it? Keep it operable of remove and paint the panel?

Is it possible to get a new scroll printed? If so, where and how much? It might be kinda cool to keep the sign if a new scroll could be made and utilized.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,
Our MC-8 already had PRIVATE COACH printed on the scroll so we left it. When we had our 4106, we wanted ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL in the destination window.  I took a piece of clear Lexan, applied vinyl lettering, painted is flat black, then removed the vinyl lettering. We installed it in the destination window and installed amber lights behind it. Jack

Doug, you sure can get a new sign made.  The price was quite reasonable when I had ours done, with about 20-25 readings..

If the link below works, it's a discussion of where I got the new sign for our 4107.  Transign made the original, and made my new one - and even supplied the right tape to tape the new one onto the end of the old one.

The PO took out the glass on our 5A and fitted a piece of wood in its place and carved out Footloose and Fancy Free on it. Has held up well but i did have to repaint it last year.
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Arthur,

Thank you very much for the Transign info. I will get in touch with them and discuss making me a new system.

Thanks Again,

I thought it would be really cool to put in a LED display that I could put whatever message on it that I wanted.  But then I decided as I was doing the conversion, that I really liked having another window.  So it is staying as a window.

Doug, by the way, they can also do color, and some different type fonts.  I had the name of the coach done in script, but everything else in plain block, white on black, just as the original.  If they know the type of bus, they can print the readings on the back, so they show as you crank the sign.  If I recall, I didn't select this option, to save money.  I'm not running a route where I have to change the sign often.

Look at the end of your present sign - it may have a Transign number.  This assumes that you have the original mechanism still in place, not just an empty area.  If you don't have the original mechanism, you'll need that --- not just a new sign curtain (the proper name for the destination sign readings).

You'll want to be careful when (if?) you tape the new sign to the end of the old one.  The sides have to be parallel, so it works with the roller edges.  If you replace the old one entirely, be careful putting the new one on.  The critical element is to have the sides parallel to the rollers, so it doesn't skew off to one side and wrinkle or tear.  That also ensures that the display will be even.

lostagain

Our '57 Courier 96 has a scroll dest. sign with at least a dozen sayings, including "Lost Again", which we had on most of the time. Half the sayings are in Spanish because the PO took it to Mexico every winter.

Our new 5C doesn't have any signage at all other than the stock MCI logo.

We always had fun with the signs on the old bus, and "Lost Again" made people point and smile every where.

However, we really like the anonymity of the new bus with no signs. Even if it looks like any other motorhome to most people but busnuts. Part of it off course is that a newer bus doesn't attract attention like an old classic such as the Courier.

Doug,
Glad to see you are going to use it also. I think it will be great fun. I started (I think it was me) a thread a couple years ago or so about some different ideas to put on the ribbon. People came up with some classics!!! I tried to look up the thread but I'm not much with the "search" and a little pressed for time right now. But if you are going to have one printed, ya might try to find it. Some clever stuff right there.  ;D  I was also hoping to find some place to make me a ribbon as well but I want them to also leave a good deal of it blank for future fun.  ::) And then find some lettering I can stick on it or paint that will hold up to sun, rolling, whatever.
Good luck!! Post some pix when you get here going!

Fellows,

Thanks for all the information and the great ideas for the sign. I will check into having a new sign printed and keep you posted on the results.
