1978 MCI-8.  Is the bus serial number used as the VIN, or is there an actual VIN?  If so, where would I find it?  Thanks.  Kirt

On my 68 5A it is only 4 numbers.  Later coaches have longer numbers.  Gal at the DMV said she had never seen that short of a vin before. ;D
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Thank you.  Have a great weekend.  Kirt

I also had to explain our 4 digit number to our insurance company, on more than one occasion.

A couple in our local FMCA chapter have an MC-3; it has a 3 digit vehicle identification number.

My 5a also has the short VIN.  The funny thing is that at some point the CA DMV made someone go through the process of getting a longer ID number assigned, but when I went to register the bust ,he DMV reverted to the original number.  I have no idea of their logic.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

Yes, Stormcloud.  Your story is exactly what I am working on; an uninformed insurance agent.  When she questioned my experience and ability to drive a motorcoach, I was even a little extra sensitive.

Hey Lin we got into Yucca Valley last nite. Will be here for a week or maybe longer. Any chance of meeting you?   ;D

It took some calls at my local dmv to get my bus's vin # to work. I was nervous. I've had issues with a boat and after building my own bikes. Just love the dmv. :(

From  Wikipedia...

"A Vehicle Identification Number, commonly abbreviated to VIN (but sometimes incorrectly referred to as VIN number), is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles. Prior to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats"

Good luck.

Early production MC-8s had the VIN placard riveted to the front of the driver's side parcel rack, similar to the MC-7s.

Later production 8s, and most MC-9s had them riveted to the panel above the driver's left shoulder, just in front of the driver's overhead map light.

Often converters, both professional and non-professional, either cover them up or remove them, thinking they're not important.  If you have a cabinet in this location, look inside and see if the VIN's still there.

Regardless of the status of this VIN plate, there is a second plate riveted to the bulkhead in the cooling blower compartment over the engine.  It's above the gearbox and below the sight glass for the radiator level.  You will probably need some rags to wipe it clean before you can read it.

Perhaps also you should consider changing insurance agents??

Kirt,

Like RJ stated, mine is in the front and one in the back. But unlike the earlier post my VIN# and Serial# are two different numbers on my MC-7.
