I'm missing the dipstick for the transmission (yeah, I left this one open for further commentary, fire away  ;D ).
I have a new one that is apparently a universal fit and you are supposed to cut to length according to application? I was told that I need to know exactly the model and other info from the trans in order to know capacity. Where would I find this info and then how do arrive by the proper length of the dip stick with this info? Are there really that many differences by year or whatever? I guess I have the HT-740? See my sig for info.

Any ideas?

I'll be nice and  won't comment on the missing dipstick  :o, but the answer to your question is in the Allison HT700 mechanics tips document.  They give a table of measurements to mark your dipstick from the oil plan split line.  The measurements depend on the depth of the oil pan.
