Loose Lug Nut indicator

Just passing along some info I stumbled across.

When I worked for the Fire Department a long time ago, the Master Mechanic had us paint little fine black lines on the silver painted lugnuts and red painted steel wheels sosss he (or us) could tell if any nuts (on the wheels!) had worked loose.  Seemed to work then.  HB of CJ (old coot)

just do like me , put a small mark with a marks-a-lot on one side of the nut to the wheel. I check mine regularly

I see these all the time on cement trucks and some straight trucks.  First Transit also uses these on their transit buses and some coach buses around here have them.  They don't exactly add to the look of the bus, but it certainly makes it easier to be sure lug nuts aren't coming loose.

The marker on the lug and nut is free and won't be so noticeable.

On white wheels a loose nut will cause a rusty streak outboard from the nut.

I just mark with a paint pencil or laundry marker pen, works well.

I looked at those and thought about offering them in my store but passed because bus nuts didn't much like the looks of them. What impressed me about them is that they are also made to melt above normal operating temperatures that would indicate a brake or hub problem. Can't do that with an ink mark. Maybe if they came in different colors it would be more appealing.

you have to carry spares, if you try to take them off in cooler weather they tend to break.  I have them on my bus, they are ugly as ugly can be, but they do a job.

The trouble is, you already have a loose nut, and have to notice it, with the originals. This newer product prevents the nuts from rotating from wherever they were when the plastic is slipped over it.
