King pins

Hi. I was told my Mci %a needs new lingpins. They are readily available through MCI. My question is,can or should this be done by a backyard mechanic like myself. Any feedback would be great.

i have a 67-mc1-5 and had kingpins done it was  right at 1200.00
figured since they had tires off  did brakes and new shocks while they had the  tires off

It depends what you've got for tools.  They can be a real pr*** to get out - you may need a red wrench and you'll definitely need some big jacks and something to pull/push them with.  Its not a particularly difficult job - just a dirty ignorant one.


* for my American friends - "red wrench" is what some of us Canucks call a torch.

I would have that job done.  If something goes wrong or breaks, it is at the shop already.  Good Luck, TomC

If you do it yourself, at the minimum, you need to take the spindles, new bushings and new kingpins to a machine shop to have the bushings pressed in and fitted to the kingpins.  Unless you have a good concrete floor, a lot of big tools & jacks, I would bite the bullet and have it done.  I have most of the big tools, torch and some jacks, but etill opted to have it done by a shop that works on big trucks.  I think it was around $800.  Jack

well,I have the "red torch" Multiple 10 ton jacks,and a press. Brother works in machine shop. That might cover all the basics,and getting dirty is everyday event.If I do make the attempt, I will report my success

Feel free to document everything with pics and maybe some vids, then post them here.  I will probably do this one day, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one, so you will be doing us all a favor
