Center High Mounted Stop Lamp
Attention: Required for vehicles less than 2032mm wide and 4536kg

That's 80" wide, the same point at which marker and clearance lights ARE required.

Now, I can't find the source but I have heard somewhere, that even if a light is not required, if it is installed, it must work.  Don't know if that is correct.

If I cover the hole with tape and the light assembly and wiring are gone, I don't think I would get in trouble for a non-working light.  I hope this becomes a moot point and I get that light installed before the next trip.

I reread the legal requirements for a bus and it indeeds says the third brake light is not required for over 80" wide.

Brian,

Len beat me to it with the link to the regs.

Center stop lamps are not required on vehicles over 80" wide, including your bus, even if the manufacturer equipped it with one at the factory.

However, if you have one, it must work properly, otherwise drivers behind you could become confused.  If you have it out, and there is just a hole there now, you are OK.
