Students home safe following bus collision with tractor-trailer

PAYSON -- It was a close call early Monday morning for 45 students of Payson High School. The school's choir members were on their way home from California when their bus was involved in an accident just south of Fillmore.

The charter bus was headed northbound at about 4:30 a.m. when it came upon a tractor-trailer that had just crashed and spilled debris all over the freeway.

"We came around a corner, and the roads were icy, and a semi was down on the road. It jackknifed, and our bus driver barely missed it, but it clipped the windows," explained student Josh Davis.

The bus driver went into the median to avoid the truck but still scraped against the semi. Most of the students were asleep at the time of the collision, and many were awakened as they were being thrown around inside the bus.

"It was really, really loud. Then people started screaming, 'I need a first aid kit!'" said student Heather Pedigo.

Five students were hurt badly enough they were taken to the hospital in Fillmore. Tyson Memmott was sleeping with his head up against a window when the collision shook him right out of his seat.

"I was asleep. The next thing I knew, the window hit my head and went flying into the passenger seat next to me," Memmott said.

He and the other four injured students were all treated and released at the hospital. "I don't have any broken bones, but I have three dislodged ribs, and my lower back is not aligned," Memmott said.

The students can now all cheer that they are home safe and sound with the first place trophy and memories of a week they won't ever forget.

"We feel very lucky that they got through it as well as they did," said Nebo School District spokesperson Lana Hiskey.

The truck driver who was involved in the original crash was hurt, but we understand he is being treated for several broken ribs but is doing alright.
