Is there a way around Mount Eagle in Tennessee?

My wife and I are planning a trip to Memphis, Tn. in July from south Florida. Is there a way to avoid going up and down Mount Eagle or any other mountain that is in our way as we go? We have a 1948 Silversides and would like to avoid all of the mountains and skinny roads possible.

It is all interstate driving, Easy up and down. Nice rest area on top. There is a short way that you will have to get in second gear. Been over it a lot in several different type of coaches. Fred

   Another way is to go to Atlanta on I-75, then west to Birmingham on I-20, then north on I-65 to Exit 340 at Decatur, AL. then US 72 across north AL, the corner of MS into Memphis. There is a beautiful state park (Joe Wheeler) on 72 a litle west of Athens, AL.  Jack

 Sounds like you need a copy of the Mountain Directory East. Use that along with a good atlas and you can plan your route and know exactly how many passes you are going to go over,.... how high, how steep, how long, etc.  Well worth the money.

This is a good route:  Take I-75 North to HWY44 at Wildwood West on HWY44 to US-19. Then North on US-19 to I-10 West on I-10 to US-231 then North on US-231 to Montgomery AL then I-65 North Birmingham AL then US-78 into Memphis TN 973 miles no big hills and a lot less traffic than I-75.  We use I-65 to Montgomery and US231 to US19 into Fl.

I would just go up 75 north to 10 then over to 27 north to bainbridge ga then west to Dothan to pick up 231 north to Montgomery. I have gone that way many many times. Not only good roads, but no traffic and a little quicker time wise!

Road work on I75 and I59.  Took me four hours from top of mount eagle to hy 74 at Cleveland.

RoadRunnerTex...I was on 78 today from Tupelo, MS to Birmingham.  It is a beautiful 4 lane interstate type EXCEPT for the last 10 or so miles which is 4 lane going over to I-20/I-59.  I assume Tupelo to Memphis is also 4 lane too.

I75 to I10 to 78 in Alabama is the way to go. Mount Eagle is not really a big deal but getting through Atlanta is always a pain.  Prather

I feel for ya Dave! Our 4103 isn't a real mountain hopper either!

When we came down from Tn to the Pensacola area we used US 45, a really nice road, although there are a few stoplights along the way. There are no real hills.

I think my route would be
I-10 to Mobile, catch I-165 through town, then south on I-65 for a couple of miles to the US 45 N exit.
Follow US 45 to Tupelo, MS, (bypass Columbus, MS by taking 25 or US 45Alt), At Tupelo, catch US-78 into TN.

just so you'll know should you decide to pass over MONTEAGLE!  the locals might get a little testy since there is no Mount Eagle in Tennessee.
