Title: Thermafiber board for genset box.
Post by: grantgoold on October 06, 2008, 07:47:35 PM
Anyone had any experience with this product. They say it is is fire proof, sound attenuating material. I am thinking of using this product in between a sheet of lead as the interior for my genset box.

Anybody?

Thanks

Grant

Don't know your particular material but I've tried the lead and personally think it's more work than it's worth.

My favorite sound attenuation material is fairly cheap and works quite well-

McMaster ( http://www.mcmaster.com/ )  part # 5692T13 - plain backed (you have to provide your own glue) or the same stuff with adhesive,    5692T13

The stuff is inexpensive and does a VERY good job.  If you check out the catalog, notice the sound absorbing number (NRC) - higher it is the better- this particular one has the highest of most the things they carry....

What kind of temperature range does it tolerate? Would the foil backed be better around generator? Thanks

I made my gen compartment out of standard 3/4" plywood with 1" single layer lead foam insulation.  Since it is mounted next to the driver's seat like a front engine and had to be installed through the front door, all maintenance has to be performed from inside also.  This combination is very effective- I demonstrate its' sound qualities by first starting the gen with the access door open, then close it for the difference-truly amazing it stops that much sound.  Good Luck, TomC

the stuff from McMaster Carr looks like what I used around the generator on my hospitality trailer. the genset was mounted in a box mounted to the front of the trailer and skined in aluminum panels. with out the insulation it was very loud. with the insulation you could barely tell it was running. I used the type with the foil face. I never had an issue with the heat from the genset and on mine the exhaust pipes and the radiator and all were in the box with only the air flow from the engine driven radiator fan.

This material is rated for 2000 degrees. While semi-stiff the stuff is designed as sound and heat insulation in production facilities. I was thinking to reduce the heat in the bay I would you this material on the outside of the box and then cover it with some of the material already described. I was thinking that I could provide a layer of lead just on the outside of the box and in between the two layers of theramfirber.

The material has been described as a steel wool/and rock composite like material that is used in sound studios for sound and industry for heat. I have access to the material at 10% of the normal cost (craigslist!!!!).

My genbox will also have two 12 volt auto radiator fans to push hot air and pull in cool air through the bay door.

Keep the ideas coming!!!!

Thanks
