Title: Muffler under the bay floor?
Post by: grantgoold on September 21, 2008, 05:45:08 PM
Anyone have issues with a genset muffler under the bay floor? I can understand the heat issue can be reduced with fire insulation. Other concerns or ideas?

Thanks

Grant

Depending on muffler size and which bay (front, center, or rear), possible ground clearance issues?  Jack

Grant, Jack brings up some very good points! I have my gen muffler under the bay floor. It's not up against it but close! Maybe an inch! I don't think there are any buses lower than the H model when all the air is out of it and it still doesn't hit the ground! The muffler came from Wrico I believe and it's an oval shape rather than a round if that helps! Also it's mounted about mid way of the coach on the driver side! Gen exhaust right in front of the outside drive axle tire also on the driver side.

The gen muffler on mine is under the bus and there are no heat issues.

Mine is under the bay also and I have no heat issues. It is an oval muffler and I kept it as close to the front as I could to avoid hitting the ground. I have a manual leveling system and raise the bus when off roading!!
After I did mine a saw a bus that had the exhaust pipe going to the rear wheel well, the mufflers inlet and exhaust were on the same end of the muffler, with the muffler mounted vertically on the front wall of the wheel well. I can see pro's and con's of doing this, but it seems like a good idea?   Jim

Unless you have the manual leveling system like Jim, I would be concerned about the ground clearance issue.  Not so much when parked or on level road, but when entering/leaving driveways and parking lots or crossing some of the more radical "speed humps".

If you would like to evaluate how your bus does in those situations, take a helper that can drive the bus while you observe from the side and go find some of those obstacles.   If you don't have a second driver, take a helper with a camera and let them get out and sit down low to the side with the camera.  Then take the bus slowly acrosss the obstacle with them taking several pics as it passes.

Keeping the muffler as close as practical to the front or rear tires helps with clearence issues.  JIm

I have the oval muffler mounted under the front bay of my eagle. In 5 years I have not hit the muffler. I do keep the bus at the correct ride height.
