Title: Oil overfill
Post by: Lin on September 19, 2008, 07:54:50 PM
I had someone do some work and being very thorough, he checked and added oil for me.  Unfortunately, he must have check the oil just after running the engine without letting it sit.  The oil level is way up.  Any problem with letting it work its way down?

A couple qts wouldn't hurt, but too much will cause oil to foam and oil pressure to be lower. Also would blow more out than usual. This info was given to me from an old GMC rep years ago.

I would drain some into a can. That's when those blue nitrite gloves are so nice!

Lin, if it's straight 40W oil...a good run will burn it off without any damage to the engine...assuming it's an 8V71. You won't like the residue on the rear of the bus...but that's the price you pay for letting someone do your work.

Sorry for the criticism...but that's the way the mop flops....or drain it out. That will be a real experience!

Can't you put a tube down the level check tube and suck some of it out?  $9 vac pump at HF and cluge together a gallao tank that has the pump and tube into the crank case.....5 minutes later one gallon of oil.  Of course I have a vac pump for a different reason but maybe you also can find a "need: to own one.

in addition to the other great comments another thing to consider is that if the level is up excessively high so that the crank throws are hitting the oil then this extra friction will cause the oil to heat up more than normal.

Just for the record you can add at least 1 gallon over the full mark without causing any harm and possibly 2 gallons.  How far is "...way up."?  It has to have an extraordinary amount to actually hit the crank when running.  I've read that some DD mechanics actually recommend over filling up to a gallon to keep oil temps down.

HTH,

please pardon my ignorance (again).  what or where is "hf".  why would you have a vac pump if not to siphon something?

Amen to JohnEd! I might add that you can use 1/4' nylon tubing from Lowes or HD to attach to vaccum container. Been there and done that at work (retired).

About too high to hit the crank's throw will cause oil to foam (bubbles in oil) to get into oil pump to bearings. This is first most important to be concern before the oil heating up.

I am not a DD mechanic to tell you the relationship between crank's throw and the oil pan gasket's surface. Who ever have done rebuild DD on this board can help if he will.

FWIW

I am guessing it is about a gallon up.  I actually used to have a hand vacuum pump attached to a container and a tube.  It was made for doing an oil change by sucking the oil through the dipstick tube.  I was thinking that it would come in useful now.  It is straight 40 oil.  He used a jug of what I had stored in the bus.  One of the things he was doing was taking care of an oil leak for me.  Therefore, I guess it made sense to him that the oil could be down.  Oh well, I'll take it for a ride and see if it starts to get messy.  If it is not tolerable, I'll drain off a little.  I just wanted to make sure it would not cause some mechanical problem.  Thanks

I wouldn't think that oil would be anywhere close to the crank at the fill line so an extra gallon is not going to hurt. Don't forget that as the engine is running you will have a lot of oil suspended in the internals as your helper found out.

Man,

Deisel pickup trucks have vac pumps to run the gasoline system vac brake booster.  ??? They do not suck up anything. ::)  That isn't my purpose though.  I use mine to transfer Methyl alcohol cause the stuff is poisen and will blind you quick and any motor has sparks and the crap will also explode and/or catch fire.  Hose into storage drum to mixing tank, hose from mixing tank to vac source, power up the pump in the next room and Housten " we have fuel transfer".  Did I mention the mixing tank also has lye in it and the two together make methoxide...I think.  Whatever, it will literally disolve flesh. No sparks....vac.

If you haven't walked down the isles of Harbor Freight you need to do that.  Sorry to be vague, :P  I thought everybody knew. ;D

Frank,

Right arm!

Have fun,

John
