Title: generator exhaust ideas ?
Post by: grantgoold on September 18, 2008, 10:36:54 PM
Folks, I have an 18kw air cooled genset in the driver rear bay. I would like opinions on how to run the exhaust. I cannot change the location of the genset and recognize that 18 kw is very large. I simple need input on how to take flexible exhaust tubing and send the hot air ouside the bus.

I thought that down through the floor and then out just in front of the driver rear tires?

Opinions?

Our generator is instelled in the OEM AC condensor compartment, but our exhaust exits from under the body in front to the driver's side drive axle. Make sure it extends slightly beyond the side of the bus. You should also consider making a vertical stack to use when camped. This puts the exhaust gases (and some of the exhaust noise) up above you and your neighbors.  Jack
PS: Don't fgorget to put a muffler in the exhaust, preferably outside of the generator bay to help prevent excessive heat in the generator area.

Jack, I used your ideas for an exhaust stack and it worked great.

Grant-is that a gasoline powered or Diesel powered?  You said air cooled-what about the cooling air for the engine? Do you have a sound enclosure around the genset (to be considerate of your neighbors?).  Good Luck, TomC

Tom, the genset is a diesel 3 cylinder Deutz air-cooled. I will build a sound box shortly and will add a high efficiency fan to add in cooling. I have a muffler that I would like to add to the system outside the bay to help reduce heat and noise. The simplest route for the exhaust would be through the floor and then out the side of the bus just in front of the rear tires. I could set it up to include the vertical stack.

Anyone have issues with exhaust pipes through the bay floor?

Thanks

Grant

That's exactly how mine is done. I used a coupler at the floor per Fred Hobe just so the exhaust can stay attached when I slide the generator out for service!
