anyone out there running a 458, can you tell me if it's normal for the caseto get too hot to touch either when charging or inverting?
Getting ready to call their support, but I figured I'd ask people that have actually used one first :-)
I have the 458 and it gets warm but never hot
If it is in an enclosed compartment, it can get quite warm if it is working. They are designed to shut down if they get overheated.
If you have a 4000 VA model, it's possible to need to dissipate up to 600 watts of heat. If that heat is trapped because the fan isn't working or the compartment is closed, it might feel really warm.
For what it's worth.

CC,
My manual for a similar unit warns that cooling air flow is needed. PVSSES told me a while back that the space/enclosure needed to be vented to prevent overheating so he is consistant with his advice ;) ;D ;D
There was a post a while back that described a failure due to the internals being dirty/dusty. DEFINATELY want that as routine maint cause that little dust thermal blanket will let components fry but the safety won't trip.
First check your fan. Does your manual say it is a multiple speed? Make sure it goes through "all" of its speeds going from cold start to the "hot" that you describe. "tronics" don't like heat and the life span of anything tronic will be dramatically shortened by operating it in too much heat. FACT!
Check for cool air for the supply. Check for dirty internals. Check for correct fan speed cycles. Check that fan is not installed backwards,,,air blowing out....or in...as it is supposed to. None of those? Start over.
