Title: Soots me just fine
Post by: cody on August 28, 2008, 05:31:25 PM
In the ongoing troubleshooting process on my iggle turbo problem I wiggled far enough into the engine compartment to see into the area on the drivers side of the motor, it's covered in the same kind of soot that I saw all around the turbo after the clamp broke on the hot side of it, the light at the end of the tunnel is either going to be an onrushing train or a possible cause, dallas brought up the possiblility that the gasket on the exhaust side has gone to a better place, it looks like this may be a possibility, and that would account for the lack of power and boost also the black smoke, my question is now how does a person correct this without completely tearing out things like the radiator, gray hair or other unimportant limbs

Cody,

You quack me up! Your iggle sounds like it could use some fine tuning! Forget the sawdust and wiggle in there and get 'er done.  ;D

I think Dallas has you headed in the right direction, he's one of the bestest DD man ya know. At least he's mobile, talk him into going for a drive.  ;D

Have fun my friend, ::)

Yep, paul, my iggle does need some fine tuning for sure, I'll be mapping out an approach to correct the problem, it seems that eagle never intended this side of the motor to be worked on by humans.  I'm, at this moment, growing the necessary appendages that may enable me to wiggle into this area with out removeing the radiator, headlights and radio anttenas that are probably rooted in this area.  I find it interesting to note that the passenger side that would have been a breeze to change is easy to get at, nothing in the way, a clear shot with nothing but probable success, this side is solid and without even a hint of leakage at this point.  At this point the cabinet saw has been quietly rolled out of the way, libby has stocked up on bandages and splints and I am gathering the resolve to go where no man was ever intended to be.

Very cool talent you have there Cody. 8)

I need to learn how to do that sometime.

Where there is will, there is a way.  Good luck on the venture into no man's land.

Cody, Don't you have a service door in the floor just above the engine
on the right side. On mine Eagle there is three service doors. I don't know if there is a  difference between a 01 and a 10 which I have. you should be able to get to it that way.

Lol, long story lol, normally there are access panels but my iggle came as a really long tube no nothing, not even a floor, I din't know I needed the access until it was pointed out that I had none so now I have to blast a hole in the floor back there, but I'm not sure I can get at the exhaust frm there either, just a tight place to work, mine is the 6V92 in a model 10.

Cody, Thats what I got a model 10 1981 with a 6v92 And yes it can be done through the floor if you have the panels. I don't know why you don't have any, But they say that there are no two Buses the same.

Cool, I'll blast lol. The main reason the panels are not there is becuase I didn't make any lol. When I pulled into the yard with the bus the first time, my wife looked into the door, then down at the ground thru the floor framing, then at me, lol, she said, 'couldn't you buy one with a floor at least?'  I kinda enjoyed the rocks and stuff the tires picked up bouncing around inside the bus as I brought it the 250 miles home, was a challenge lol.  Actually I didn't know I needed them until BK and his dad and Dallas all looked at it and asked me why I hadn't put any in and I said huh?  As they shook there heads I realized I had a lot to learn and from the looks of it, I haven't learned much yet lol, but I'm trying.  The beauty of it is that I can make the access panels as big as I want too now, and I'll make them as big as I can lol.  You don't know what kind of a relief it si to know that I can get at that gasket from above thru the floor, I have been picturing trying to take the radiator out and all the assorted headaches that could create.  When I contacted our closest detroit shop up here (90 mles away) they told me that detroit doesn't make 2 strokes, that would be a weed eater.  The only other shop that has the word diesel in their ad asked it it was like a Jetta, so you can imagine how excited I am with the possibilities of actually being possible to do it myself without having to fill the yard and garage with disembowled eagle pieces.

Cody,

First of all....great posts. ;D  Truely salable stuff. :)  Thanks for the gut splitting laughs.

Now, about that turbo boost gauge and how handy it would have been to see this thing going south as it did so. ::)

Good luck with this.  A gasket you say? Whow!  Lucky you on the expense of the parts to fix the little dear.  Now the chyropracter bills.....that may be a whole different matter. :P

At this point a person has to see the humor in these things, I have a turbo boost guage but being a rookie I didn't know how to interpret the readings it was giving, the simple things like water temp, oil pressure etc, those I understand, but this is my first diesel and I'm far over my head when the hatch by the motor is open.  Slowly I'm learning but for an old guy it's a hard road to follow, the gasket isn't a firm diagnoses yet but it looks like its going to be a strong contender, not knowing what kind of boost it should have led me to think that my high area of around 10 seemed to be fine, now I'm finding that that would have been low all the time. Being the only busnut in this area or for several hundred miles in any direction certainly doesn't lead to stimulating converstions on the back porch in the evenings, thats why I appreciate this board and the friends here.  I'll be blasting a hole in the floor above the afflicted area after this weekend so I'll have more information shortly or at least I hope too.  I'm hoping for a bad gasket and not a cracked manifold or anything tramatic like that, I try to keep it simple in my troubleshooting, hopes and dreams too.  The fact that the exhaust seems to be louder on that side, the evidence of fresh soot, simular to what the broken clamp deposited, all tipped dallas and several others into telling me to take a close look on that side in that area.  What I'm trying to develope is a sence of a finely tuned ability to observe the obvious, not an easy task for me at times but I'm trying.

Cody, remove your rear bumper section (then your arms will be long enough) ,remove the exhaust pipe from turbo and go for it from the front of the engine easy to remove the 6 nuts and replace the gaskets, I did it that way on a 8v92 in a Eagle  good luck

Cody I know what you are going through so far as not having any boost,I brought mine back to vegas from Illinois(almost 1800 mi)with about 3 psi of boost before discovering a badly burnt up turbo out put hose(cheapie)and once I replaced it I had over 20 psi .Hopefully the gasket(s) are the only thing setting you back if it is be prepared to hoot and hollar for joy with your new found horsie power.

Cody, if you have lost power the turbo could just be loose. Those gaskets are almost indestructable. Exhaust leak ahead of the turbo on the exhaust side will cost you power. After the exhaust leaves the turbo it won't, its just a leak. Hose clamps on the boost side come loose also. When a turbo goes south it usually pumps all the engine oil thru it and I have seen one use 4 gal of oil in a mile. Lots of smoke.

this one smokes but it's over fueled type of smoke. the leak is in the manifold area, not sure what all is leaking yet but it's louder on that side than it was and also the same kind of soot that I saw when the clamp broke on the turbo itself.

There isn't any sign of the turbo pumping out any oil, I'm going to try to wiggle the camera into that area and take some pics tomorrow, that may tell us a little more about whats up there.
