Title: Sarting problem,,, found problem again!!
Post by: jjrbus on August 26, 2008, 05:06:11 PM
Is this starting to seem like spam?? ???   Anyway I a muddleing my way through this.  I did not trust my diagnostic skills so took starter to be rebuilt. $280!!   A small rolling floor jack as per Jack Conrad used with a little finesse makes the removal and installation almost a breeze.
Anyway Fay has departed and everything is back together and I touch rear start button and there is a brief hesitation and the bus fires right up!!!! OH OH I do not like the hesitation.
I let bus air up and shut it down, let it sit a few minutes and try it again. It is slowley cranking, this is not going to start.
I get the voltmeter out check the batterys, down 1 volt, that is ok. I run the selector switch through a cycle and try again, slooooow cranking?  Time to get Jerrys instructions out and start all over again, and I'm thinking did they rebuild the starter right???
Befor I get started I will check all the connections for the 20th time. And as long as I am at it I will take the poistive wire off the selector switch and put it on the battery. I take the wire off the switch and the lug just about falls off!!!!!!!! If it were not for the shrink wrap it would have fell off.. The end of the wire is green. Its been like this for awhile.
When I did the system I did take these wires and pay to have the lugs crimped on. Is this one going to be an islolated incident or are all lugs suspect??? This is the only cable that is battery cable (coarse strand) the rest are welding cable (fine strand)
Would this still have been a problem if I had soldered after I had them crimped??

Welcome to the creeping green death.

Eventually, it happens to them all.

As you already know, crimp/solder/shrink tube/anti-corrosion paste/ religious chanting will change the time frame, but eventually, all must die from the green death.

regular inspection and cleaning.

happy coaching!

Jim, I won't even consider cranking my engine unless my starting batteries show 26.0 or higher...preferably 26.8 puts a smile on my face since they're a few years old.

Good Luck with your trouble shooting.

I too had this similar issuebut on a terminal block that crumbled like a cookie when trying to get to the terminals attached to it for cleaning. How ever I did try fabricating a garlic clove necklace hung around the offending terminal, all it did was piss the terminal off even more cause it stuck it's finger out at me and fell apart.

Bob, you had me doing a web serch on that one!!!   I thought my data storage unit was failing at an even quicker pace.
I checked online (external memory) and fully charged 24V should be 25.4 or 25.2 depending on the battery!!

We recently found a rotten lead clamp on one of our atart batteries. It gave itself away by getting hot while letting the coach set with headlights on for a few minutes.

Cold connections are the best ones IF they are making any connection at all.
