Title: How do I test a CO detector?
Post by: belfert on August 18, 2008, 08:07:09 AM
Is there any way to test a CO detector to be sure it still works?

I bought an ordinary home CO detector and mounted it in the bus.  It went off last year when a friend started an unvented heater inside the bus.  But, this year the ready LED is not on and the test button doesn't do anything.  I suspect that the batteries are just dead, but how do I know if it works after new batteries?

I don't really want to throw away a good CO detector, but I don't want to die of CO either.  If I have to get a new one, do I need one specifically for an RV?  I saw one at Menards that says it works for both RVs and homes.

Sounds like the batteries are bad.  See if it comes to life when you replace them.  If so, just put it near some source of CO if you do not feel the built in test is adequate.

Belfert I have the home type in my coach I use the Kidde Nighthawk 900-001143 it is a 110v and  a battery backup which I have wired into the house battery system with a voltage drop to 9V that way it works on both power sources never a worry about dead batteries now back to your question a candle works good for co and smoke testing
