Title: I can't believe it!
Post by: Dreamscape on August 16, 2008, 03:27:01 AM
The weather forecast today calls for RAIN. It is raining real hard right now, I know we need the rain here in Abilene, but today is not good!

I finally bought the primer and paint, cleaned, taped and covered what is not to get sprayed this week. I have waited for this day for quite a while and now it looks like the humidity is going to spoil my progress.

The thunder and lightening is severe right now, oh well.

Just had to vent my frustrations,

Paul

Paul,

The up side is you have it in that barn now....right.....

If it was outside the tape and cover job would be in a little jeopardy.

On another note, and the opposite of your situation, it has rained here everyday but two here since July 1st,  I want just a wee little bit of dry.

And of course, now there is a TD tracking right past Jack and Paula and then to my back door...what ya going to do.....work in the shop I guess. :'(

Speaking of Shops, I brought home the ultimate MAN item from Texas for my shop, a stand up urinal...."we stand up to pee....UgH...Ugh..."

See I need some dry weather... :P

Of all the things us men want, a stand upper! ;D

At least no seat to worry about.

Yes, the bus is in a barn, the nose is sticking out about 4 feet and covered. I'll be OK. It's just a bummer.

The Thunder and Lightening show is about over, now it's just raining.

Oh well, the ranchers have been crying about no rain. Well now I hope there happy, cause I'm not. ;D ;D

Hey Paul gotta let those ranchers have some water once in a while, other wise there ain't no grass for grazing. And if there ain't no grass for grazing, there ain't on cows! And we all know if there ain't no cows, there ain't no STEAKS! ;D  BK  ;D

And as a side note the state of Texas, GEMA, CPA, and TEMA have us and many other charter operators on standby for possible dispatch as early as Monday AM!

Paul, the bus gods work in mysterious ways they gave me jury duty for the month of Sept but you just need sunlight and I need the month

Look at the silver lining in those storm clouds.  If you rewipe it and shoot it at the first opportunity after the storms leave and the humidity drops, there will be less dust in the air.

This was my plan.

Driver side, prime today, paint tomorrow. I'm heading out again on Monday, hopefully back home on Thursday or Friday. Maybe I can try MY PLAN again!

With 80% chance of rain today and dropping to 50% tomorrow, it just aint gonna work.

Oh well it could be worse. I could be sitting along side the road in Palm Springs with a broken down air compressor.  ;D Remember guys!

There will be better days!

Think I'll go take a nap!  ;)

Leave it until you have a couple dry days with low humidity.   The results will be better.
Primer especially will absorb moisture.  Some primers must be scuffed up and recoated if allowed to dry for more than a couple of days.   Primer and moisture are a PITA.
Hope you're using good hi-tech tape.  Standard masking tape sucks. Use the 'green' pro tape and you'll be able to leave it on the bus for a month or longer and it'll peel cleanly.  Cheap masking tape, should be pulled off and retaped with good stuff.
Paint sprayed in humid conditions might be dull, and there's no fix for it.
I'd be patient with the weather.
Another month should give you better 'outdoor' conditions anyway.  The ambient temps will be lower, and the humidity should be lower too...?
Get the paint right the first time...no matter how long it takes.  Give it your best shot!
Good luck, JR

I have to have this bus painted by Sep. 5th at the latest. So the paint will be cured in time for a road trip to TBR 2008.

I will wait until better conditions, hopefully after I return from Toronto late next week the weather will be more co-operative! ;) My patience is being tested, and I'm working on it.  ;D

Then it will be prime one side one day, topcoat the next. Flip the bus around and repeat on the other side. Then the front and rear in that order. That is a total of eight long days. I think it will be doable. I plan to do it one time and one time only.

I Thanks You for the tips,

By the way, I didn't use regular masking tape on the important stuff, only on paper  ;)

This may not be practical and I've never tried it.  I'm just trying to think outside the box on a way to control the humidity so you could paint when you need to.  What if you used large sheet plastic and simple wood framing (just enough to securely support the plastic) to create a limited air space paint booth over the side to be painted?  Then use a window air conditioner to work as a dehumidifyer for a few hours before spraying and during drying.  If you put some extra filtration over the intake of the AC it should help remove dust from the air in the "paint booth" too.

I know the small window units can do well at dehumidifying.  For several weeks we had 70%-100% humidity and my two little window units kept it nice and dry inside.  They had a steady fast drip from their drain tube.

Good idea HTR!

I would probably go for it except it only rains here in Abilene when I don't want it to!  ;D

But if I lived in a wetter climate I would do one of two things, find a large booth or rent a hanger and go for it!

This is just a small setback, actually I'm glad it's raining! It made me go over the side in detail and found a couple of things that I needed to do. Also tried both guns with thinner to set them up and clean out any oil because they are new.

Now I can say I am 100% ready when I return back home. The long range forecast looks good too!
