Title: New Oil pan for HT740 needed
Post by: Chariotdriver on August 12, 2008, 05:23:16 AM

We recently replaced the internal screen and gasket on the Allison HT 740 and in the process
found someone had installed a sheetmetal screw with a rubber gasket to plug a hole in the sidewall of the pan.
We welded it closed and have now found out that there are some other thin areas and I would like to just replace it.
Where would be a good lead on purchasing one?

We bought ours new from a transmission place called WW Williams.  http://www.wwwilliams.com/  The cost of the pan & gasket was around $450. This was new.  They installed it along with some new cooler hoses, fluid, and gave our bus a little check over, for $500.  We didn't have any other options, we blew a cooler line on the road.  Previous owner had backed over something and crushed the bottom of the pan in, so we just replaced the pan when we had the hose fixed.

Any Allision dealer will have 1 just get the same depth you have now because there are 3 different depths on the pans

I did find one for 373.36 for the 6 incher low profile pan.
I just replaced all the fluid and changed the screen and now I have to do it all over.
At least I can install the modulator for the air throttle at the same time the fluid is out.
When we changed the fluid the manual stated to add 26 quarts and then 1 at a time until showing up on dipstick.
Does this assume that it is a normal pan drain because it took quite a bit more to show up on the dip stick.

Also I think my Neutral position switch is bad, but I have not noticed that it is keeping anything from working so should I worry about getting this fixed also.
I've heard that the high idle would be one thing that depends on this, but my high idle is not working so I will not worry about it.
( maybe this is why the high idle is not working!)

Yes, the high idle should have a couple interlock circuits that only allow the fast idle to engage when in neutral with the parking brake applied. I do not know how much a neutral start switch is, but while you have all the fluid drained???    Jack

Care needs to be taken when filling an auto transmission after a simple pan removal.

There is an undetermined amount of fluid up in the transmission, the torque converter being the big unknown. You can't really determine a rate at which it may or may not drain to pan level.

Allison has suggested the smallest amount that you can safely blind pour into the pan, then you have to go gently, checking that you don't over do it.

For those who use the forum as their only maintenance book, remember this is with the engine running.

If you have to know how much, for a rough idea, you could measure what came out...

happy coaching!
