mccarlk,

Are both engines 8-71's and are you going to swap them? If so you can use the parts off the auto engine.

the engine was completely missing, so starting from scratch, can i use any auto flywheel? or does it have to be for the 644 combo?

You had said in a earler post that your transmission had the spacer for the number one flywheel.  I would think if it had that it would still have the flywheel attached to the transmission.
The flexplate is attached to the engine and the flywheel is attached to the transmission.
Hope this helps

Mc, the 644 does not have a starter ring gear on the torque converter like the 740 the starter gear and the flex plate are 1 unit and you buy it from a Allision dealer for the type engine you have just any flex plate will not work.and don't forget to buy new bolts for crankshaft end those are 1 time use only bolts also change the rear engine seal   good luck
