I blame democrats, republicans, enviromentalists, and oil companies for the pricing coming down. ;D I'm sure they'll all work together to get the price back up ;D

This is exactly what I was hoping for.  I returned from my last trip 3 weeks ago, and my 4104 has been sitting with her tank at 1/4.  I have been wanting to fill up so that I can complete my fuel mileage calculations, and be ready for my next outing.

When I first arrived home, I took a look at the local prices and nearly threw up on my shoes. The prices here in PA were about 20 cents/gal higher than what I was able buy fuel for during my trip.  With no immediate travel plans, I decided to hold off and see if the prices would come down. Of course, there was the risk that they would continue to climb and I would be kicking myself.    Does that make me one of those petroleum speculators everyone is cussin' at? :D

Now the big question is "How long do I wait?"    As Clint would say: "Do ya feel Lucky?"

Ok guy! Slowly but surely? I don't know but I don't trust that! I think that the price will stay a little bit lower but too high for us.

In Quebec, in july, we have payed 1.599$/ a liter for diesel. Now, this morning, 1.459$/ a liter and regular 1.239$/ a liter. The difference between regular and diesel: 0.22$....Why? Because the profit is better with diesel than regular. And then, I think, must people buy regular fuel and, "may be", are happy (have a break) this situation.

They found the price that would cause people to move past whining & bitching to action & actually reduce the amount of fuel they were using. So the demand dropped & the prices followed.  ;D

Now if we all go back to our old useage ways, I'm guessing the price will go back up.  :'(

I'd have never thought I'd be happy to pay $3.47/gal for gasoline . . . . But I was when it dropped $.40/gal from the last fill-up.

They do this all the time, raise the price way up and then drop it down.
But they never drop it down to where it was.

By doing this they condition you into accepting a higher price.

Remember when we were complaining about getting to $4 a gallon?
Well now you are happy that it has dropped to $4.40 a gallon.

The fuel price roller coaster has led to a separate discussion in our household this week..

Many of us that live in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions heat our homes with "home heating oil" fired furnaces. Of course, heating oil is essentially off-road diesel without the highway taxes.

Each year the heating oil delivery services offer customers the option to pre-pay for their anticipated winter useage.  The theory being that the oil company will use your front money to buy fuel (or fuel futures) at the lower summer time rates as a hedge against the winter price hikes.

In years gone by, we have participated in these programs, and overall it has worked to our benefit.  This year I have strong doubts.  Two local delivery services (including the one I use) have a pre-pay cost of about $4.45 /gal.   A few other companies have announced that they have decided not to offer these programs this year.  I'm leaning toward taking my chances with the market price this winter.  My wife always feels more comfortable with the price locked in, and wants to pre-pay. As always, she says it is ultimately my decision to make, but reserves the right to second guess me if I screw up.  ;)

It is depressing, but I looked up the past costs of heating oil we purchased:

Jan 2004   $1.079 /gal
Jan 2005   $1.449
Jan 2006   $1.839
Jan 2007   $2.569
Jan 2008   $3.099
Jan 2009   $ ouch

We are approaching the deadline to pre-pay if we choose to. With the recent drops noted in this thread, I'm even more inclined to pass on the pre-pay.

Many years ago (70's and 80's)I used to have business in Phoenix about 5 times a year. ;D ;D ;D ;)  Great place and I have mucho good memories.  One thing always stood out to me and that was that on Friday afternoon the gas prices would go up 25 cents per gallon.  All over town, at the same instant, all brands and private stations and corp. owned.  It was explained to me that it was because the weekends saw heavy demand and on weekends the sales to "out of towners" went up sharply.  Locals knew that practice and never filled on a weekend.  Talk about oil companies running the show. >:(

Does this still go on in AZ. and does anybody know of other places where the "control" is so blatant?  Even then I was sure there was a fed law against price fixing.  I have no doubt that those people are still up to their old tricks but are better at it after having the law repealed so the oil companies could use better practices to bring down prices for the consumer.  Worked is the "Savings and Loan" industries and has been right on target with the "Banking Concerns".  It would be better for the consumer if we had fewer or just one "brand" that could run the entire show so the consumer could reap the benefits of lowering the mfrs costs...YA THINK?

Now this post has nothing to do with politics....just when and where to fill up and how to manage that activity to operate your bus at the lowest cost per mile.  That and, of course, many other reasons why I vote the way I do >:(.....OPPS :P....darn! ::)  Didn't mention a party now....in my own defense.....nor a Make of bus. ;D  Drat!

JohnEd that doesn't go on in the Phoenix are any longer to many out of state retailers now like Quick Trip from OK  but prices will be different over the area Mesa is the cheapest and Scottsdale being the highest. Ft Stockton Tx is a place I try avoid buying fuel right in the middle of oil fields and the prices are the same at all stations usually about $.20 to $.30 a gallon higher than Van Horn

That's interesting.  I lived in Ft. Stockton 20 years ago.  Back then Ft. Stockton was where you tried to be to fill up in that stretch of I-10.  320 miles west of San Antonio and 255 miles east of El Paso.  And all the smaller pit stops in between were way higher.  Just goes to show how times change.

I went through there a little over two years ago. The place had changed a lot in other ways too, for the worse.  It used to be a nice place.  Right about the time I left they built a large prison there.  Then two more in the area.  Now it is a town made up mainly of families of inmates and the employees and their families.

I don't try to find the cheapest fuel, or wait to see if the price will change.

I buy fuel every week on Saturday on my way to our regular gig. There are 3 places I can fill up both the deisel and gas without moving the bus so I usually stop at one of those. The price difference is usually very close to each other.

In most cases the price difference is not enough for me to go out of my way to save a few dollars because I would burn up that and maybe more in fuel to get there.

I got a call from a drivers wife (still puzzled as to why she called instead of him!) last night at 11:30 telling me I needed to go fuel the buses that were not full @ "Food Plaza*" (our local Phillips 66 retailer & usually the highest price around!) as they had just dropped the price 23 cents (down to $4.29)since he'd drove by it on his way to pick up the bus (which he'd come and fueled in the afternoon at a different station for $4.47).

Hurry!  Go do it now!   ;D

Once your tanks are full the price is sure to drop some more and we all benefit.  ;) ;D

I am hoping that once  investors who bought oil futures as a "sure thing" investment take a big loss, that investors in general will run away from investing in oil and prices will drop further.

you all have just a few weeks to get fuel at low prices.  we usually fill up at 1/4 tank and i'm at 1/2 now.  no more trips until Sept 4.  i'll let you know because the price will go back up to $4.74 as i pull into the flying j.  the last time i filled up, the price went down the next week.  so it seems i have an effect.

i'm also a weathervane for company stock prices.  when i buy 100 shares of anything, the price goes down and the day after i sell, they develop a new product and get rich.

4.39 is the last we saw in ohio a few days ago.

The going price in my area near Minneapolis seems to be around $4.29 with some places not in my immediate area as low as $4.14.

With my luck, we'll have some major oil related disaster before I put in 40 or 50 gallons on Tuesday when I take the bus for the annual oil change.

Apparently Northern Virginia has not gotten the memo about fuel prices falling. I checked the price just before I went to Tn on the 27th of July, it was $4.79 a gallon.  I checked it again today, guess what , it is still $4.79.

I was curious, so I popped over to the Flying-J website where they post the fuel prices for their truck stop locations across the country.  If my quick scan was correct, the winner is their site in Kansas City, MO which has Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel at $4.049 /gal.    So let's see who's going to be the first to crack the $4 mark going the correct direction?

EDIT:  I think I just answered my own question. The website for Pilot Travel Centers is showing a location in Middlesboro, KY with diesel at $3.999

Hello,
Just got another phone call from same drivers wife, said she just drove by again and now it's down to $4.24. This is highly unusual as the staion/fuel stop I am talking about is on average anywhere from .05 to .25 higher than everybody else. Mainly do to the fact that they are the only "truck" fuel stop in town. By that I mean they are the only one convienently located, and have 4 sets of pumps for "BIG RIGs". All the rest are either little convience stores or the CO-OP. (which ya gotta be a member of or pay cash/check during 8-5 hrs!)  ;D  BK  ;D

We still have one station at $4.67 for diesel.  I guess they haven't noticed the station down the street has dropped the price at least 4 times since $4.67 and is at $4.29.  Sometimes the $4.67 station is the least expensive.

Brian they are probably the only honest independent dealer around. Meaning they don't go out start raising the price as soon as someone else does. But rather change it up or down (which ever the case maybe) when ever they get a new load in, and base their price on their cost! Then when the others go down, they leave theirs at what it cost them until they reload again. I know that is how the Murphy's at Fulton does it! FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

I love this, I remember $1.60 a gallon. Then they run it up to $5.00 for an extended period so when they drop it to $4.50 we are all supposed to jump for joy.

I have a friend that worked the refineries all his life and cannot understand why diesel is so much more than gasoline. It never used to be. He says it is cheaper to make. People tell me it is because of all the diesel powered cars and supply and demand. I think much of it is we buy so much of it for our military. All I know is that it hurts. Can't take the kids camping.

i think this has been said b4, but the high diesel price is not due to manufacturing costs or supply and demand.
it's easier for the greedy oil barrons to gouge the diesel market because most trucks are able to pass it on to the price of goods and there are less diesel voters.  there is an uproar when some parent can't afford to drive her kid to school or herself to work.  but no one can figure out just who's gouging whom when bread, milk or clothing goes up, actually due to the high diesel cost of transporting those goods.
the news shows pay more attention to the price of gas and voters pay more attention to the politician that plays the excess oil profits game.  truckers don't get the press nor are they the majority of voters.
so raise the price of diesel to compensate for the slightly lower price of gas even when gas costs more to make.

ohio flying j diesel $4.22

Title: Re: fuel lately/Diesel refining
Post by: TomC on August 09, 2008, 09:32:02 AM
Diesel fuel once was a rather crude product that was just between kerosene and lubricating oil.  Then first they reduced the sulfur from 5000 parts per million (ppm) to 500ppm, then now to 15ppm.  Think of it as the Diesel fuels equivalent of taking the lead out of gasoline.  The reduction to 15ppm allows all Diesel engine manufacturers to be able to run exhaust particulate traps with catalytic converters.  These new devices are so effective, I had a customer bring in his new truck with 6,000 miles on it and you could still see the chrome on the inside of the exhaust stack-hadn't turned black yet!
If you've been around Diesels for alot of years, you can remember how stinky it used to be just to fill up your tank.  Now Diesel fuel has barely any smell.  And last weekend, I changed my fuel filters and was amazed at the fact that Diesel fuel is just about clear now-almost looks like water.  So no-Diesel is not a crude product anymore.  The higher level of refining along with higher demand for the product (and it will continue to increase with more Diesel vehicles in the future) makes for a more expensive fuel then in the past.

I am jumping up and down that the fuel is coming down right before I leave on a 12 day 1000 mile trip.  I'm going to Mammoth (strangely the exact same weekend as I did last year) for a few days.  I am staying in my metal cabin and parking in front of a friends wood cabin along with 3 other couples (at least one member of each couple I've known since high school-now that's some old friends!).Then onto Carson City, NV, South Lake Tahoe, down to Sacramento to see the train museum in Old Town, then to the bay area where I'll park in the driveway of probably my oldest friend (known since junior high) in Pleasant Hill, then on back home.  Getting 5-6 mpg, at $5/gal- I was planning on $1,000 for fuel for the trip. Now with it down just $.50, it'll save me $100.00 or more.  Looking forward to getting out of Dodge.  Got to go-wife and I are going to the bus to do laundry and last minute clean up before departure on Wed night (to get through the desert heat).  Good Luck, TomC
Title: Re: fuel lately

The typical pattern for fuel stations is to immediately increase the price at the pump when the price at the depot goes up, regardless of what they paid for what they already have in their tanks.  When the price at the depot goes down, they wait to drop the price at the pump until they receive a load of the lower priced fuel.  That way they maximize their profits on both ends. They will also "slow drop" their prices if they can get away with it. If the price drops 5 cents in one jump, they will space that out and drop a cent or two per day or every other day to extend their profit window.  Of course, their profit on fuel is usually only pennies per gallon at best.  They make their money on in-store goods.  The highest profit margin is fountain drinks and coffee.  I used to get a kick out of QuikTrip doing the "super-summer-special" of a 46 oz. drink for 79 cents and people would think it was a wonderful bargain.  Total cost, including the cup, lid, and straw was under 10 cents...nothing like an 700+% profit margin!

Do we win a prize for the first spotting of less than $4.00?  At two stations (one is a Citgo) near Independence, VA on Hwy 58/221, the posted diesel prices are $3.99 and $3.98.  Admittedly, Independence is a bit off the beaten path.  The Chevron in Hillsville, VA (I-77, Exit 14) has a cash price of $4.23 today.

The sad thing is prices for diesel were under $3 at the end of September 2007 even in Reno, NV where prices start to climb near CA prices.  At the beginning of March 2008 diesel was running $3.39 near my house in Minneapolis.  That was around the time prices really started to climb.  I was sick for 10 days and prices were running $3.69 by the time I was well enough to leave the house.

What makes today's prices even worse is just five years ago in Sept 2003 I paid $1.21 a gallon for diesel in Cheyenne, WY.  That was my first diesel powered vehicle.  I didn't pay much attention to diesel prices before then.

I paid $4.18 a gallon yesterday for about 20 gallons of fuel.  I was expecting to spend closer to $200, but I way overestimated how much fuel I had used since the bus was last fuel in late September.

The silly thing is that there are three stations in two miles:  One is at $4.18, another at $4.67, and another at $4.54.  Which one do you think gets all the business right now?

We have one near us that makes me curious every time I drive by.  It is an older independent station, with little to no store for non-fuel purchases.  But the gas is always 15 cents HIGHER than everyone else around (including Chevron).  I never see vehicles fueling there (understandably) and I can't figure out how the guy stays in business at all.  It almost makes me wonder if it is a front for some other kind of activity....

All three stations have competitive gasoline prices, but not diesel prices.  I have fueled my diesel car at the $4.67 station a lot because until the last few weeks they have often been the low price station by a few cents.

At one time within the last year or two all three stations were owned by a local fuel distributor, but one appears to have been sold now.  The $4.18 station has a very competitive price right in the middle of the price range across the Twin Cities so it isn't like they are trying to rip people off.

I did see on twincitiesgasprices.com that some stations are now at $3.99 which marks the first time below $4 in some time.  Barring major disaster it looks like it won't cost anywhere near the $5 or $6 per gallon we planned on for a trip to Witchita at the end of the month.

Best place for fuel, and obviously, no one from the board is there, is in emporia, ks.  flying j has ulsd and lsd for 3.939.  Pembroke, NY is still using up the expensive stuff at $4.399.

i'll be running out there later to top off about 80 gal worth of the cheap stuff on top of the 60 gal of $4.749 from my last fillup.

Is the Emporia Flying J the last exit before the tollway?  I'm heading down to Witchita in two weeks and we'll probably stop there for fuel.

I noticed that Flying J propane prices have skyrocketed!  $1.99 last fall and $3.19 now.  I suppose I shouldn't be surprised with oil prices these days.

3.939 at Gary, IN, Peculiar, MO, and Emporia, KS Flying J.

also, in case no one else got the flyer from flying J, then now have a credit card that you can get the cash discount with, as well as a discount if you have their RV courtesy card.

i'm sure the price above is the cash price, so you can get an added $.01 off with their RV card.

never been in a Flying J RV island where the charged extra for credit cards Loves will get you.You don't get the $.01 at FJ anymore unless you spend money in the overpriced c store and restaurant

i don't go to the flying j rv island.  tooo sloooowwwww pumps and narrow island.  usually the turn up past the front doors is a pain also.  my wheelbase doesn't turn a 20 foot circle very well without an air horn warning going off as someone starts backing up toward me so they don't get behind me.   ;D

i pull in to the truck area where the fuel is less and a cash discount as posted on most signs.

we do shows so my driving is partly for a living so i got no problem filling at the truck pumps.

and yes, you do have to buy a ton of stuff to get a discount at the overpriced store or the restaurant that serves a whole lot of bad taste for a reasonable price.  but don't tell anyone i said that cause i don't want one of flying j's waitresses spittin on my plate.  we ate at one and i wish i'd had a pb and jelly sandwich in the coach instead.

Some FJs are tight I have 45ft and get in bind but the truck islands are always dirty and  the wife does not diesel in the coach plus I live Scottsdale and use the Rv island to save the $.08 a gal even if i do weigh over 26,000 they don't bother me

i always thought the prices were the same, but i haven't been to the RV pumps in a few years.  it would surprise me if the cash price for trucks, was cash or credit for RV'rs.

and i didn't know about any weight limit.  we used to go with the winnie we had which was 30k lbs. and i never saw a sign.

i'm not argueing, just clarifying.  all my friends will tell you i do make mistakes and miss things.

Hey Tom fuel is the same cash or credit at the RV pump with the RV card from Flying J and they will cut off at $500.00 if you don't go inside. The law in AZ is not over 2 axles and 26,000# to get the $.08 off but everyone uses the RV pump with no problems

I do not know if this will effect things, but I read that we usually maintain two battle groups in the Persian Gulf, but we now have two extra on the way.  The speculation is that it has something to do with Iran.  Possibly a blockade or prep for attack on nuclear facilities by us or Israel.

Sorry, just re-read the article.  There are three more on the way!

Considering that Iran's big threat to the Western world has been that they will blockade the strait, extra naval presence makes sense.

And of course such news usually does drive up oil prices.  Just as it does when news breaks that some oil line in the back 40 of nowhere is damaged,  some obscure country producing 2% of world oil is having another coup, or an Arab leader has a head cold.   ;)

Well just got home and on the way, I checked the same fuel stop again and like recent days, the fuel prices have dropped once again! Now we're at 4.15! 5 miles or so up the road fuel is still in the 4.20's. Should I or shouldn't I is the question? Planning a trip in about 10 days anyway but with Fay heading in and not sure how strong it will be, it's a toss up! I have about 1/2 tank which is about 100-115 gal. so I can get somewhere IF needed! Was going to fuel up before heading out on local trip but will this storm raise the price or not!

I feel like I'm in a Vegas casino! :)

Friends of mine with buses have already readied themselves just in case this storm turns into something more and have invited us as a caravan to wherever but only time will tell!

If it were me, I'd top off the tank in the next day or so just to have the security cushion of knowing that I don't have to stop for fuel for a while . . . .  8)

If fuel drops another $.25/gal, I'll eat a PB&J for a few days to make up the difference.  ;D

Besides, as soon as you do fill up, you know the prices will really drop & the rest can thank you for that.  ;)
Just think of the service you've done for fellow busnuts!  ;D

I topped off the tank last week and prices dropped by 9 cents at the same station since then.  I only put in around 20 gallons so it wasn't much.  I wanted to be topped off for my trip in 10 days.

We fuel at least 3 times a week and it just ain't coming down like we'd like it too! It's $4.09 at our local fuel stop. Dad got it for $4.04 this AM  @ Flying J in Oak Grove, KY. ;D  BK  ;D

PS Ace if it were me I'd be headed down to fuel right now! From my previous Hurricane Assistance runs experiences, they jump at the chance to start gouging as soon as they can say "the storm has made it hard to get our supply"  FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

When I was at your place almost two years ago now I believe diesel was $2.38 or so at Walmart when I fueled the bus to go home.

While I was traveling this summer the question was often raised - If and when do you think fuel prices will come down? My answer immediately was, I know exactly when prices will drop, the day I get home!

Price @ Flying J when  I left Tampa beginning of May - $4.15

Highest price I've seen on the road - $5.21

Price today @ Flying J - $4.15

Well the local fuel stop got the fuel down to 4.09 a week ago and that is where it stayed! It was exciting to see the price drop sometimes twice in a single day but looks like 4.09 is what I'll end up paying tomorrow when I fill the bus!
Uh well I guess I can count on about 500 bucks for that since I already have a half tank which is about 120 gallons!
OUCH!!!!

Just filled the turbodiesel Mercedes yesterday at $4.199. And this in L.A.  On my recent trip I paid a low of $4.049 in Carson City, Nv.  Still needs to come down to $3.509 for Diesel and under $3 for gasoline.  Good Luck, TomC

Ahhh glad that's over, for now at least! The storms scared me into thinking fuel might go up since the local stop is steady at 4.07 so we aired up and took off!
Bus fired right up with no hesitation! This is from being sat for about 2 months. I owe that to my on-board charger/tender!
Got to the fuel stop and as I opened the fuel door, WATCH OUT! The BIGGEST hornets nest I ever saw was hanging right above the fill cap. Ok maybe not the biggest but big enough that I didn't want to start fueling. I quickly removed the nest with quick swipe of a putty knife and stepped on the remains.
Back to fueling...

Still fueling...

And still fueling.

Ahh it cuts off finally and I top it off!
I figure I might as well fill my generator tank too and it also too a while.
Bottom line...$695.00 and were full all the way and good to go!

Ahh what a relief it is, and this comes a day after we spent 3000.00 for a new bed!
Hey you can't take it with you!:)

$3000!!!! for a bed.  that won't improve on the cushin you should be pushin which is already worth way more than the bed payment.

i'm not sure what this has to do with fuel, although thinking about beds and pushin cushins usually get my horse powered up.  ;) ;D :D :D

what happened to the babes, bluegrass and buses sig block?

Tom, buying a new bed (at 3K) was a shock to me too but it stems from Susan having a sore back! Can't say exactly why until we gather at a late night chat,  but hers and mine have been hurting for a while now! It HAS to be old age for sure! Let me say too that this new fangled bed DOES feel really comfy compared to the old one! First night sleep was the best in a long long time! Have you priced beds lately? The one we HAD cost 700 bucks and now I feel like that was money wasted and THAT one is only 4 months old! By the way, the new bed came with 2 FREE (yea right) $99.00 pillows and a stuffed bear! I'll have to explain that the bear is a promotional thing and is stuffed with the same junk the bed is made out of! Go figure! Most expensive bear I ever bought! Heck it's the ONLY bear I ever bought now that I think about it!

Yea I know this has absolutely nothing to do with bussin but I thought the fuel prices were bad enough and not getting much better for the most part.  Filling up the bus was relatively easy after the day before when we bought the bed!

Oh well...

more cushion for the pushin and more ounce to the bounce but one things for sure, I got fuel! :)
