We just had or Neoplan changed from Bus to Motorhome in California. We figured we would share the painless way to acomplish this.
You need two forms, Statement of Facts and Verification of Vehicle form. One the Statement of facts, on the back under body change, you put BU to MH. Then in the big box, you write, This vehicle is a Motorhome.
Then you find your friendly CHP officer, and "peace officer" will work, but they prefer CHP. He fills out the Verification of Vehicle form. Make sure he puts MH in the body type. There are acctually officers that just check vin number. After answering his curious questions as to why you would want to go to all this work and expense, he will sign the form. It helps if you know where your vin number and federal sticker are. If he can't find the federal sticker, he will do a complete search for it and sign the form anyway.
Take the forms to DMV and tell them to change the body style. They have no reason to doubt it being a motorhome and they won't ask to see it.
The Neoplan is a shell, no seats, but he didn't even really look inside. I told him we wanted to get the change done before pouring anymore of that money into it. Don't take photo copies, DMV checks.
Absolutely painless.
