Title: Question for Nick or other AC guys
Post by: luvrbus on August 05, 2008, 04:26:06 PM
I have Cruisair Ac's in my bus and I have never had a problem with the units, last year I had the 3 units serviced and the guy put a small amount of freon in one.My question is can you over charge a unit it works great when the temperature is below 100 degrees ( 100 is hard to find from TX to AZ) but after that it will start and in a few minutes and will stop blowing cold air.At TBR last year Larry Hicks told me to let a small amount out and I did but it still does not work right any suggestions here the unit works great at night and till it reaches 100 to 105 degrees in the day time      thanks

Hi LB,

Does that unit have enough fresh air for the condenser compaired to the others?

You can also amp it out and compair to the others. If the plate says 14 amps, that's at 85 deg. ambient. The higher the outside temp,

the higher the amp draw. Just compair it to the others. If it's higher, then you can assume it's overcharged, or starved of condenser air flow.

Let me know

Check and see if your condensers may be a little dirty.  If you have
been on some gravel or dusty roads, they may just have a coating of
dust on them.  Just take a water hose and wash them out.  With the
temperatures being as high as they have been it doesn't take much
restriction to cause the head pressure to soar, and even if it is still
running it will not be as efficient as it should be.

PS.  If it is still doing this when you come down for the TBR Rally
we can put some gauges on them and check them out then.

Also to charge it they have to put on an adapter and they tend to leak if not done just right, or the leak has lost enough freon again, if the unit is very old, the leaks tend to be from work hardening of the copper tubing from compressor vibration and don't take long to get larger.

Clifford and Sonnie,

Sounds like a short seminar in the making at TBR 2008.

Hopefully you can get it fixed by then! Still it would be great for you guys to go over it at the rally.

I know nothing about AC stuff, maybe I could learn a thing or two. :D

Thanks for the advice Nick and Sonnie I will check for those and RayD the units have valves from the factory for the hi and low along with a sight glass and there are no bubbles in the sight glass only on startup
