Ok...... so I aired up my bus and blocked to back bulkhead up with 6x6's (and 1, 1-by). I crawled under there and replaced the center section of "belting" to try and help keep the motor cool. (about 25% was missing. Thought it might help)
After I got done, I crawled up under there a little farther forward to where I heard a slight air leak. (plus I have never been under a bus that far. Kinda scarey ::) lolololol) Anyway, there is a valve or something bolted to the bulkhead and it's right in the middle, facing backward and closest to the ground. There is a "peace sign" looking hole with a screw in the middle of it and the air leak was coming from behind the "peace sign". ;D ;D What should I do? Any fixes or is it new part time, yet again?
I know, I know, I'll get in the book and see what the hell it is after I get done with this post. ::) I just wanted to fire it off to you guys and see what ya thought. There is also an aluminum -again- valve or something, connected to that piece via a short pipe nipple. It looked brand new so somebody before me had worked under there and replaced that. The teflon tape is still pretty white.
Time to go put some ice on my eye and face where I ran into a vice grip I had on the project I'm working on. (idiot.) Gonna have a nice "cat's @$#" as Dad called it.
Thanx guys,
Chaz
Chaz, I think the part you are looking at is called the Relay valve it is operated/activated when you push down on the brake application valve using the brake treadle
hope this helps
Chris
Thanx Chris. Found it!
I looks like it's a rebuildable valve from what the book says. From the looks of things under there, it hasn't been on the suggested maintenance schedule that the book recommends. ;) ;D ;D ;D lol
Not looking forward to this one. :P
Chaz
alot of stuff on buses is rebuildable as per the book. sometimes it is almost as cheap to replace the whole thing now days.......certainly if you are paying someone to rebuild vs doing it yourself.
If you have the original R5 relay valve they are no longer produced and are difficult to rebuild successfully. I think the rebuild kit is $25 to $30 plus S&H if you can still find one. Just buy a new R12 valve with a 4psi crack pressure and you should have an easy swap. ~$40, I just put one on my bus last month.

A direct replacement for your relay valve is a R-8 for the later buffalo series and to replace the aplication valve use a E-6
don't bother trying to rebuild either unit, new ones are really inexpensive less than a nice dinner out

I sometimes forget even though I have a GM my 4106 is much older than the Buffalo's. Go with what gmbusguy1 said. I spoke with Bendix and they said for my application, the R12 with horizontal ports, was the best replacement for my R5. It mounted up to the old bolts, and the hoses hooked up just as before. My kind of fix. :)
