Title: reconfigure Seires 60
Post by: rusty on July 16, 2008, 03:16:34 PM
I am converting an Eagle 15. I am trying to squeeze another mile or two out of a gallon of fuel. A few of the things I am doing are switching to a t-drive in the forward position and a tag axle in the rear with super singles on all four ends. Dual air filters and dual exhast systems and a two speed fan. I am using a 515 horse Seires 60 with a ten speed Eaton auto shift. The motor is new (3 miles). the truck it was in was recked in transport from the factorty to the dealer. I could not pass up the deal. The bad news it is a DDEC 5 with EGR. THe EGR will burn more fuel. Now my question can I go Back to a DDEC 4 with this engine?
                                                                                         Thank You Wayne

I don't believe you can, without major expenditure rebuilding a new engine.  I would suggest that you just reprogram the engine from the maximum 515hp at 1650lb/ft torque to the 455/490hp (455 hp on gas pedal and 490 hp on cruise control) at 1550lb/ft torque.  I worked with the DDC factory guy and on his computer program came up with this setting as the most fuel efficient setting, yet still having good performance.  Try this out before you start changing the engine all around.  I think you'll both like the performance and the fuel economy will be on par.  Good Luck, TomC

Wayne, that engine is EPA certified for highway use in the USA and the great state of CA so no help is available for you from a dealer, the head is different, injectors, pistons, the turbo, the engine weighs less than the pre EGR, what side of the engine is the EGR cooler mounted and is the EGR valve air or hydraulic operated.By the way I just finished my series 60 install (pre EGR) in a Eagle 15

Tom C  I will try your set up suggestion. My rear end ratio is 3.53 the auto shift 10th gear is .73 and the 445 50 r22.5 will revolve 490 times in a mile. At 65 MPH the motor will be turning at 1370 RPM. Is that to slow for cruising? Will that work the motor to hard?

Two Stroke   My EGR cooler is on the left side standing at the back of the bus. The EGR is air operated. On that subject my A&I manual does not address what PSI I should supply to the controls. Do you know? How do you like your Sieres 60 with the B500 that should be a sweet set up. You should have no trouble getting up the hills. Bring her out to Colorado I know a place where we can test her.
                                                                                 Tank You Wayne

I just want to clarify which tire you are using.  The 445/50R-22.5 is the replacement for the 295/75R-22.5 or 275/80R-22.5 at 514rpm carrying up to 20,400lb per axle.  The 455/55R-22.5 is the replacement for the 11R-22.5, which I think you should run at 490rpm carrying up to 22,000lb per axle.  With your 3.53 at 65 you'll be at 1873 in direct and if you have the B ratio at .74 you'll be at 1386rpm or if you have the C ratio at .73 you'll be at 1367rpm.  A bit slow, but remember you're relatively light weight compared to a 80,000lb truck that this was designed for.  If you tweek it up to 68mph you'll be at (.73) 1430rpm which is right at the 14-1600rpm recommended by Detroit-so you should be just fine.  Once you have it running-you'll learn that you can get better performance off the line if you start in second and manually shift it, skip shifting.  So like 2-4-6-8-9-10.  But-the most economical is to just let the transmission do its' thing.  Good Luck, TomC

Wayne, i didn't keep the B500 I used a Cat CX35 8 speed auto I got from a mutual friend of ours sweet transmission and engine but the 8v92 will always be my favorite engine. If problems don't come up maybe I can stop and visit when Clifford comes your way if not I will see you in Branson looking forward to meeting other eagle owners and see Mark Reeners fans on his eagle
