Title: OT, M.A.C.C. Musicians Against Childhood Cancer bluegrass fest
Post by: cody on July 06, 2008, 03:34:25 PM
I know this is off topic but I wanted to post it here for a day or two for exposure. I'm checking interest in the MACC in Columbus Ohio, it's a bluegrass festival, put on by Darrel Atkins every year as a benefit for St Judes Childrens Hospital. It runs from July 24th thru the 27th but most get there by the 20th to jam and visit. It's held at the Hoover Y park on the south side of Columbus and there is lots of parking for buses, etc, but the electric is limited and 20 amp but it's one of the best fests of the summer, most of the top names in the bluegrass field show up and donate their time and talent to the cause, many hang around for several days to jam with old friends, everyone from JD Crowe to Rhonda Vincent show up for it.  We've been regulars for a while now and the jamming only stops with our crew when the last picker tips over for the night or morning as is often the case, any bluegrass lovers can google the M.A.C.C and get the lineup, the costs and all the history of it if you want.  It's a great time and kinda centrally located, it's well worth the trip, also it's a great cause to support and it draws buses from all over.  We'll be pulling in before midnight on the 19th cause they open the gates at midnight and the sites are first come, and our bunch generally trys to get sites together.  Because of the long history some of our group have with the industry a lot of the performers will be stopping at our sites to visit and pick, it's fun and sometimes we even take our turn on stage lol.  Nothing I'd like better than to see a bunch of buses in a line lol.

Thanks dallas, I've never been very good at posting links, I'm still baffled by our toaster and aazed by our coffee pot lol.  I know we have many here that like bluegrass and I can't think of a better way to have a get together or a better cause.

Sounds like a great time for anyone that can be there. I enjoy bluegrass music and BS sessions.  ;D Unfortunately, I won't be able to go there.  :(  But I sure hope somebody can post some pics from it.

Sounds like a great idea for a mini rally.  A good time could be had by all and new friends made.  Unfortunately it is bad timing for me.  I will be headed to Tennessee about that time.  Have fun and drink a cold one for me .

there is an awesome lineup of great artists.  we were planning on going but ran in to a problem when they found out we had a dog as well as an Eagle (yuk, yuk).  they don't allow vendors with dogs - go figure.   florida had no issues but ohio's afraid of fleas.

Cody, there is a flying j just north of columbus.  are u going straight down from Upper?

No dogs!?  That's alwful.  I thought everybody in bluegrass had dogs.  This might have been one of those situations where it would have been better to ask forgiveness than permission.  ;)

Well I for one love bluegrass and if my dog "Bud" can't be welcome then I feel I'm not welcome! He goes almost everywhere I go and then some! Heck he listens to bluegrass junction every day while I'm at work via channel 812 on direct tv. ;)

I can understand no pets allowed in certain areas of a music fest but not to be allowed in the entire park is ludicris (sp)!

Well I am a dog lover too, and it upsets me that they have ruled "no DOGS". But I am a member of a group of folks Cody introduced me to. And from them I have learned that there was one bad apple who had a "Pit Bull mix" that was very irresponsible and ruined it for everybody, by allowing his dog to get out of control. They ended up having the sheriffs department physically remove the guy & dog, but since it happened they decide to avoid it all together. It is a shame that 1 irresponsible person can ruin it for the many responsible ones it affects! I am like Cody & HTR, if I were to have a dog who traveled with me, and I were able to go, the dog would be there too. I'd ask for forgiveness, instead of permission. I'd also let the calmness and obedience of a properly handled dog speak for those who do take responsibility for their pets actions. FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

We have seen dogs there last year, I don't know about this year but I know guys that will be bringing their dogs with them, the one pit bull incident was in the area we were in, the guy was warned first, then the next incident he was told to take the dog home and leave him home, the next day he brought the dog back and the dog again caused a problem, that time darrel had a deputy remove both the guy and his dog.  I know that guy is banned from future events there now because of it but as far as I know dogs haven't been banned but I can't be sure but I do know of guys that will be bringing their dogs with them this year.  I'd like to thank richard for moving this post back and letting it run another day or so, this festival is important for me for personal reasons and I'd like to see it get the exposure, I'd also like to see a few from the board here come over if they can, an imprompto mini rally would be great, especially if a person enjoys music, both listening and picking.  One of the reasons this festival is special is it's a benefit for ST Judes childrens hospital, years ago when my daughter was a baby, they saved her life and did it all for free cause thats how they do it, at no charge, they've recently told me that they are going to again do what they can to help her with her medical problems, thats one of the reasons it's so important to me to get the word out about the fest.

Maybe I read the post wrong about the dogs but what I understood was that vendors could not have dogs, not the others that are there.  We hope to be there if things fall into place here.

I just called darrel and asked him about the dog rule so I could get the straight stuff from him, he said dogs are allowed anywhere on the grounds as long as they are controled by their owners, no problem, but dogs arn't allowed in the stage area and thats where the vendors are set up, so if a vendor has a dog, they have to keep the dog out of the stage area, the person would have to keep their bus and dog in the camping area if they wanted to have their dog with them.  Thats the straight stuff from the promoter, it's his playground lol.

Cody, have you heard from any other bus nuts that are planning to attend?  It would be nice to have several more than other than just you and Libby and Dallas and I. I know there are several more that wouldn't have that far to travel to come enjoy the music and fun.

Cat, I have had several contact me and say they are hoping to be there but firm commitments are hard to find, one guy thats been an old friend for years and a musician joined the board a few months ago, he goes by 1crazytom, he's another regular from the MACC, he's an rver/bluegrasser that is currently negotiating on a bus, he'll be there with his class C, another firm maybe is Mike Hill and his son Jay from chattanooga, but that'll depend on how he feels and if he has a bus available that'll do the trip lol.  I always run into a couple of guys here from the board too that are there but I can't remember their nics right now.  I'd like to see a good representation of buses fromthe board but not sure how to do that, I figure we start somewhere with who ever can come and then build for next year, maybe at some point it can become a real rally like the others are, Slow Rider says he may stop in for a day or so too.   Also I don't know if event tickets are required to be in the camping area or not, I should have more informationavailable but for some reason I've just been running my hinder off in several directions and haven't gotten that info, I'm kinda relying in people reading the link dallas put in his post on the event and lineup for finding answers to anyones questions. All I know is that one trip to the MACC, generally hooks a person for life to it lol.  We'll have a whole pile of quality musicians jamming in the area we'll be parked in and many will be the stage performers, the crew I'm there with are the best of the best in the bluegrass world.

Update is I was with Mike & Jay all day yesterday, and they don't think that their schedule is going to allow for them to make it this year! They wanted to for sure, but they said with medical issues & other things it was already gonna be hard, but they said if Cody wasn't gonna be able to make it thast they would just scrub it this yr. FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

PS If Cody is able to travel & Libby and the DR ok it we'll get Cody there one way or the other!

OK, here is the plan, we're firing up the bus tomorrow and heading to columbus for the MACC.  The MACC is too important to me and besides the heart attack was last week, I'm a fast healer and besides I don't like to live in the past. lol.  The doc has said it's ok as long as I'm careful and split the run up a little with rest and no pressure. cody

Cody you said in off topic "Bus Nut Health" the following:

Yep, kinda giving it a try here too. After 40 years of smoking I'm giving it my best shot.  My doctor said because of my heart attack and the meds I'm on now I can't get a patch or any pills for at least 2 to 4 weeks, cause of what they tend to do to the blood pressure, so it's all on me, right now I'm at day 6 of the no smoking thing and doing ok with it so far.  I guess motivation is the big thing.  He said they have a bunch more stuff to do on my heart like valve work and I'm going to be a double bypass probably soon.  He said the need was found but at the point they found it, I wouldn't have made it thru th surgury so now I'm recovering from the shot to the beater and gathering steam for the next round, I'm thinking of haveing them install a set of jakes while they are in there.lol

Hope you are having someone who can drive for you for yours safety and others on the road.

Even if you are not driving but if...just if you should ever need a emergency again away from home care...you are more risk into more problems then missing this event. Every second counts when your in emergency room and not the same care as before.

Sojourn for Christ, Jerry
