Title: How big a compressor do I need for floor nailer and to fill bus tires?
Post by: Kevin Warnock on June 17, 2008, 05:14:26 PM
I am planning to buy a floor nailer and compressor. I plan to nail down the floor in a house addition, and in the floor of my RTS I am converting. I also would like to be able to put air in my bus tires. The flooring wood is 3/4" maple for the house and 3/4" bamboo for the bus.

Here is the compressor I am considering:

Here is the floor nailer I am considering:

I can get both of these for under $500, which is much less than hiring someone to install even half the flooring in my house addition. Seems like it can't be that hard, and I should just learn to do it, so I can do it on the bus, which I doubt would be of much interest to a pro since the amount is so small.

My question is can the compressor I mentioned keep up with the nailer and, separately, get enough air into the bus tires to hit 100psi or so?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin, these 4.5 gallon compressors do a good job providing they will go to 125 PSI. They're noisy as hell but if broken in properly will give good service. Absolutely read the instruction manual which will tell you to disconnect the outlet line and run the compressor (unloaded) for about 15 minutes. Don't assume it's been broken in properly!

I have a Rigid 4.5 gallon I've used for over 2 years and it's given me great service. I also have a cheapie which is quieter but only goes to 90 PSI. That's fine for small jobs but when I travel the Rigid goes along....it goes to 125 PSI...Like the wife...noisy but loyal!

Kevin,
I have layed a lot of hardwood and I suggest you put all your money in a better compressor and just go to your local rental store and rent the hand nailer and starter nailer.  If you buy em both (and you will need something to start and finish next to the walls) you will end up with that useless tool that hangs around in the garage just collecting dust.  With the hand nailers you wont need compressed air.  I all so suggest a rethink on putting the solid hardwood in your bus.  sense your bus will not have a controlled environment all the time the heat and cool and humidity will play hell on your flooring and it wont take long for it to start moving and really give you problems.  I would suggest a "floating" floor of the layered ply type flooring, as it is much more stable in that harsh environment of your bus.  Just my two cents.

       Hope this helps

I would look for a belt driven compressor. Most of the direct drive compressors are really LOUD!!  As far as blowing up the tires, just add a quick disconnect to one of the air tanks on board and use the compressed air that powers the brakes.  Good Luck, TomC
