Title: Slack Adjuster wrench
Post by: Fredward on June 16, 2008, 02:31:02 PM
What do you use to adjust your slack adjusters? Particularly on my MC-5 the ones on the front axle are easy enough to get a socket on. Then I can depress the lock by pushing down on the socket so I can turn the adjuster. But on the rear; particularly right rear, I can't hardly reach up in there to push down and turn at the same time.

Is there something that I'm missing?

First I spray some penetrating oil on the adjusting bolt and collar.
I use a 3/8 drive ratchet and a shallow 9/16  6 point socket, placing it over the adjusting bolt, then hitting ratchet lightly to depress lock collar. I then make my brake adjustment.
I had five MC-5C's in the old fleet I wrenched on.
Hope this may help. Good luck.   8)

I've got one of those special combination wrenches made for adjusting and checking movement but I often just use a regular 9/16 combination wrench.  Slobber everything up with your favorite weasel piss, put the box end on the adjusting nut, whack it a few times with a small ball peen hammer and, once the collar moves freely, adjust the brakes.

After makeing adjustment, make sure collar comes back up.
