I found an article today that a Police Department is considering charging a "fuel fee" when they pull you over for speeding.

As if they are not already writing tickets for revenue. Everyone likes the idea of raising money by taxing someone else. We just returned from a trip up north and stayed a couple of days in Santa Barbara. Our hotel bill included a $40. "transient occupancy fee". The CHP here says that they do not have quotas. They merely have expectations. A tax is a tax is a tax. Can they really say that their fuel budget is being used just to stop speeders. Maybe they should put meters in the cruisers and charge for every call they go out on. It seems that the general population is always footing the bill for this crime victim welfare. There is nothing in the Constitution that makes police protection and investigation a free right. This is just another sacred entitlement program. Not only that, but these crime welfare recipients want a special phne number, and the police or ambulance to race over to them instead of traveling at a safe, economical speed. The nerve! In Iran, they charge a criminals family for the bullet used to execute him. I bet they pay that bill fast to save money from more bullets being added to the bill.
well lets see. at $4 a gallon the $12 is 3 gallons. in a worst case lets say the cruiser gets 15 miles to a gallon. so now if I see blue lights asking me to pull over should I lead them on a 45 mile ride to get my moneys worth out of the additional fee? would be interesting to see that in court with the police trying to justify the charge when the cruiser was already on the road using fuel and in fact by stopping you was now using less fuel as it sat idling.
but what do I know. I am not in government so I us logic when making a decision.

They fixed the "quota" problem here in GA (or at least mad a stab at it.) They passed a law a couple years ago stating that if more than "x"% (IIRC, it is under 10%) of the department's annual revenue comes from traffic citations, the state de-certifies their radar equipment for the remainder of the year.
