Title: MCI 24 volt tail lights and brake lights
Post by: bowmaga on May 28, 2008, 05:39:41 AM
Any recommendations on where to get 24 volt tail lights and brake lights, clearance for an MC9?  We have a few out.  And it looks like the some of the sockets are rusted out and some wires are missing on a few, and some just the bulb might be blown.  Mostly from neglect.  We would replace the bulb, but the sockets are built right into the back of the housing on the brake and tail lights.

Greg,
I thought that the newer MCI's already had 12V headlights.  However, I understand that they are just not to be had anymore.  Most guys are converting to 12V using a voltage reducer, or using a 24V relay powered by your headlight switch to turn on 12V power to your headlights.  Did your bus come with a Vanner equalizer?  It would be the best source to get 12V.  Clearance bulbs are easier to get, but still pricey.  I did the same relay system for my brake lights and tail lights.  Once I had the lights down to 12V, I could then hook my trailer harness right up.  Do a search on the board on this topic, and I think you will find some diagrams.  Gumpy has a great website with lots of info for you. http://www.gumpydog.com/bus/MC9_WIP/mc9_wip.htm (ftp://http://www.gumpydog.com/bus/MC9_WIP/mc9_wip.htm) Good Luck!

I have been buying all my bulbs from www.bulbdirect.com. They have many 24 volts bulbs, name brand expensive, off brand cheap. I have not had any problems with them. Fast shipping etc. I have been replacing the outside lights on my bus and have ordered new www.Trucklite.com ones. They have the new push in bulbs, they come with 12v bulbs but I have cross referenced and replaced with 24 v bulbs. Some can be ordered with 24v bulbs already in place.
New lights look great at night, my old ones were faded etc after 20 years on the bus. Good Luck.

I have an MC8 and took the reference numbers for the bulbs to Nappa, the bulbs are pricey but available.  If they don't have them in stock they will be happy to order them for you.

Here is another online source        http://www.lamptech.com/

I made up a list of bulbs for my bus and put in one large order so I have lots of spares. I bought the generics had no problems with them in 2 years.
As stated they are available at NAPA and other quality truck suppliers but you are looking at 5/6$ a bulb the generics online are 1/2$ each!!!  Your choice.

I bought some bulbs from a local Napa store.  They had them in stock and were between 1-2 dollars.  I was pretty surprised.  I have not had to buy headlights yet but when checking this website out some time ago, they did have one of them referenced to the GE number.

Also there used to be a kit you could get from MCI that came in a clear plastic case that had all the bulbs for the 8/9/102 series.  You could probably get the info from BK , he had a couple in the shop when I was there.

I bought my original equipment clearance lights directly from MCI.

Part number 7R-7-105 Lamp Assembly (amber)  $30.35 each

Part number 7R-7-98 Lamp Assembly (red) $30.35 each

I believe I still had to buy the 24v bulbs.  Like others have said NAPA or the like will be able to order the bulbs.

I just purchased 2 24V brake light bulbs for my Prevost at NAPA and they were around 5 bucks each! Where are these 1-2 dollar bulbs? I'm going to stock up!

I bought several two filament, bayonet mount, 24v bulbs at the Napa in Santa Cruz to replace the 12v ones in my magnetic tow lights.  I don't know if they made a mistake but they were under $2. each.  I had also stocked up on some directional and dash bulbs that I order though a lighting store (Riverside Lighting in Santa Cruz).  The bulbs again were cheap, but there was shipping costs.  By buying several of each, the shipping became minimal per bulb.  That link included in my last post has several of the bulbs referenced to GE numbers at cheap prices, but they require purchasing a pack of maybe 6 bulbs per number (just from memory though).

Lin, thanks for the link. I'm putting together an order of all the different bulbs I need. They even carry the flourescent tubes that I have in my recessed lounge lights that I haven't been able to locate anywhere else. Thanks again, Will
