what kind of "distant to spot ratio" (!?!) is necccessary? Also is there a big dif in the entry level ones and the more expensive ones? Are the high end ones neccessary for basic trouble shooting bearings, brakes etc...? Gracias as always, Patrick.
I got mine several years ago at NAPA, I think about $60. Mine ios a 6:1 ratio (1" spot when 6"from gun, 2"@12". etc.). If I was doing it agaijn, I would get a 12:1. Jack
i got a few small ones at harbor freight...they were on sale for 2.99, after some testing they are pretty accurate accross the temp spectrum +/- 2 degrees against a real thermometer

Raytek Laser Temp Gun ST 60 Pro
I bought a Fluke 62 Mini for $100 and love it!
I bought the mini Raytek gun online for $40, yes it is new,not refurb.
Works just fine for what I need it to do. Helps me diagnose and troubleshoot braking system, cooling system, trans temp and wheel issues.
Very satisfied with it.

The "distant to spot ratio" is pretty important. I have two different brands and the distances are quite a bit different.

Nick.....GREAT looking blaster. Is it a Draconian Death Ray which works by deathing or is it a Buck Rodgers Photon Discinagrator which works by.....? Or is it a Klingon disruptor which works by disrupting...?
I bought my lazer thing temp reader at the local auto parts on sale for half price of $50.00 bucks. Works great with a new 9 volt batt every 3 months or sooss, or longer if you disconnect the battery.
Works best within 6 to 12 inches (hugh?) but also works well at long distance of up to around 6 feet or sooss verified by other lazer thingies. I like my coffee right at 120 degrees F. :) :) :)

HB of CJ......Jack Conrad's post (above) explained what 12 to 1 ratio is. Other words, recording spot is 1" dia. at 12" from the spot....6 to 1 is 6" from the spot.
The newer one are 12 to 1 ratio. The farther away the bigger the recording spot. You can move up and down with trigger held on to locate the hottest and coolness spot while reading.

The Bottom-Line...make sure it equips with infrared beam & 12 to 1 or higher ratio. Infrared allow you pin point reading in tight or crowded area. Other word, infrared is non-contact model.
Most all basic spot check are under 900°F.
Higher end model is good for higher temp and more feature that you would not miss for average user.
MasterCool is going for 40.96 with case and 1" dial type thermo free and free shipping.
