Title: Childhood Dream
Post by: TomC on May 19, 2008, 08:06:32 AM
My love affair with buses started when I was in 3rd grade and took the bus to school.  It was a late 50's GMC with a 292 six cylinder, 4 on the floor, no power steering and had 4 rows of seats.  The lady driver (Mable) let me open the door myself-what a thrill.  Then in Junior high, I took Crown buses.  They mostly had Hall-Scotts (Late 60's early 70's), some had Cummins 220, and some with my favorite Detroit 6-71's.  When I was in High School, one of the 12th graders came back the next year (when he was only 19) as one of the bus drivers for the school-talk about being jealous!  All through high school and college, my past time would be to be drawing dozens of floor plans for various sizes of buses and configurations.
Then, I bought my '77 40 x 102" AMGeneral transit in 1992.  I finally started working on it in 1994 when I took almost a year off from work (helps I was still single then).

My whole point to this- I'll be dog gone if the petroleum companies and their excessively high fuel costs is going to keep me from continuing my life long dream of spending some serious time in the bus (or truck later on).  I want to do what Sean and Louise are doing and live in the bus and just meander.  I maybe taking fewer trips, but am still doing it.  The second week in August, I'm going to Mammoth Lakes and then onto Lake Tahoe, coming back down I-80 to San Francisco then back down home again.  That trip will be about 1,000 miles and I'm just figuring on $1,000 for fuel.  I won't let the petroleum companies stop my dream!  Good Luck, TomC

Last november, Libby and I decided to move into our bus and take a ride, we didn't have a clue how we were going to do it or where to go but I was sure that I would be told where to go before long and I was, several times lol.  We've met a bunch of great people and seem to have invites back.  Six months later we are still wandering around, the cost of fuel has gone up conciderably since we left but we still get by, one thing I've learned is that where ever we seem to go I can find a pile of sawdust to make and that is enjoyable too.  This is the best of all the available worlds, travel, good friends and sawdust.  My greatest fear is that I'll wake up and it'll all have been a dream.
