Title: 6v92TA Detroit NO POWER
Post by: gpatom on May 10, 2008, 11:32:55 AM
Well I am back again needing help badly. I finally got my bus converted and running but sadly I have no power. I rebuilt the engine and I have new fuel and air filters. The engine runs good, sounds good, don't smoke. On a 4% grade I can only go 10 to 15 mph. I think she should do better. I have checked for air going into the injectors and that is o.k. I am getting 30 lbs. of pressure from fuel pump and I think maybe that should be more. any suggestions as what I should do.

gpatom, you should have 65#to 75# of fuel pressure make sure you did not lose the orifice in the fuel system also check and make sure the rack is opening all the way with full throttle

THANKS, WELL I HAVE 2 ORFICES, ONE IN EACH HEAD. MAYBE THAT IS THE PROBLEM. I WILL REMOVE ONE AND SEE IF THAT HELPS. HOW DO I MMAKE SURE THE RACK IS OPEN AT FULL THROTTLE. RIGHT NOW I AM CONFUSED!! SHOULD THE RACKS BE ALL THE WAY IN OR ALL THE WAY OUT WITH FULL THROTTLE?

2 ORFICES, ONE IN EACH HEAD

From what I understand that might be right if they both go to the return lines to the tank.  But only then.

If the line comes from one head Thur the orfice, then into the other head that is wrong.  The orfice should be just as the return line is exiting the engine returning to the tank.

I think that is what they tough me here a few weeks back.

O.K. I HAVE 2 ORFICES AND I AM GOING TO CHANGE IT TO ONE AND SEE IF THAT WORKS BECAUSE THE TWO GOING BACK DOES NOT SEEM TO BE WORKING. NOW I AM GOING TO TRY AND ADJUST THE RACKS IF I CAN GET THE GOVENOR TO MOVE.

I think the rack should be open when the engine in NOT running.

If there is air in the system, the shutoff plunger on the governor might cause it to be in the NO fuel position.

For what it's worth.

What part of CA are you in? If anywhere close to Bakersfield you should bring it by and let Don check it out. I guarantee you he can get it running good for you.

Thanks Songman, I am in Hesperia, which is right next to Victorville and Apple Valley. I am going to try something my son suggested and then if that does not work.........well I can drive it to Bakersfield (about 125 miles or so) it might take me a half a day to get over Tehatchapi Pass (lol) or to go to grape vine thru Langcaster, but she will make it. Wife has given her a new name. Please email me the phone number and address in Bakersfield in case I need it. Thanks again for your help. Tom

Thanks Songman for the card. Now does does anyone know what SIZE the fuel by pass orfice should be? I think mine is to large and that is why I do not get the pressure. It is 93 thousands.  Tom

Non-DDEC - R-80 fitting - .080"
DDEC 2 - R-70 fitting - .070"
Will only have 1 restricted fitting on secondary side of fuel system, sometimes mounted at rear of r/bank head, on a bracket. Fuel will then return to tank from that point. It maintains system pressure.
Should see approx 6-10 psi at idle , 60-65psi at 2200 rpm - no load speed.
What type or rpm readings are you getting at "no load" condition?
Good luck. 8)

Tom,

I told Don about your problems a few minutes ago. If you want to give him a call on his cell as shown on the card, he is driving to Palmdale right now to visit his mom so he has his phone with him. He had a couple of ideas (and questions).
