Title: Amp hours in 8D
Post by: Tenor on April 30, 2008, 03:40:12 PM
Can anyone tell me how many total amp hours are in a standard 8D flooded cell battery?  Thanks!

There's no such thing as a "standard" 8D battery.

They come in all kinds of construction:  Starting, Marine, Deep Cycle, Traction, AE, etc..  8D is, in fact, one of the few form factors that comes so many different ways.

An 8D flooded cell can have as much as around 220AH and as little as half that.

220 amp hours would be a good start.  As compared, my AGM 8D's are 255 amp hours.  Good Luck, TomC

Sorry guys,
I should have known to be more specific to get specific answers.  They are start batteries.  If 220AH, expect to get 110AH useable (max) before recharging.  When wired for 24V using 2 8D's, expect 220AH useable (max) before recharging, right?  Please correct me!

At 24 volts you still get 110 Ah usable at 50% discharge.  When wiring in series the volts go up, not the amps.

Series connection is same ampere but increase voltage

Parallel connection is same voltage but increase ampere

FWIW

24V applications require half the amps as 12v That was the reason for buses going 24v less amps to crank.

I thought the reason coaches went to 24 volt was because of all the blowers required for the HVAC?  Smaller cables required when 24 volt is used.  The same engiines used in trucks start just fine on 12 volts.

I think you have it right Belfert .... it's all about the OTR A/C system that's in the bus. I have converted my bus to 12V, with a 12V starter and I don't have any problem starting it even at -20C.

Belfert has it right.  Buses were designed to carry heat and air conditioning around the country.  Passengers were just a way to pay for keeping the vehicles cold or hot. ;)
