Title: Scrapping an Eagle, need some info please
Post by: coachconverter on April 15, 2008, 02:35:34 PM
I have a customer wanting to scrap a 91 Model 15 40 footer (don't ask) and I'm trying to find out what he might get for it.

Has anyone out here scrapped one and know the approximate weight and ratio of steel to aluminum?

Thanks in advance.

Todd

Todd if the bus has the one piece bay doors that open up the side like a Prevost or MCI I'll buy the doors from him and they don't have to be in great shape I need the hardware

Thanks for the offer, I'll pass that along if he goes this route.  I'm trying to talk him out of scrapping, but want to get a realistic price for him first.

But now that I think of it, it has the flip up doors, not the standard Eagle baggage doors.

Nobody ever scraps an Eagle, they just keep rebuilding them.
As for scrap, only the skin is aluminum, mostly .080.  The lower half, if original, is quite a bit heavier.
Unless it's really trashed, it's probably worth more as a parts bus than scrap.

So does anyone know the approximate weight of a 15-40 model?  And willing to take a guess at the aluminum to steel ratio?

Thanks Guys

Todd,

I don't know if this will help but, I removed all the aluminum off of my 69 model 5 and just the aluminum, brass and copper, alone weighed in at approximately 3,200 lbs.  Gave us a return at the recycle yard of $2,000.  I still have a pile of stainless to take and recycle but I am waiting for the market to go back up on it before I take it.  I would guess the stainless at 700 lbs.  This may help you factor your scrap value.  Last number I heard a whole bus was valued at about $1,700.00 dollars in scrap.  Judging from the labor it took me to dismantle it, I would say that is pretty close.  I am not sure  of the likeness of materials used in the 15s verses the 5s but this may put you in the ball park.

Todd, the best I can find out for you is the model 15/40 can weigh from 28,800 to 30,400 depending on how it was equipped Cummins or Detroit engine ,manual 7 speed transmission or Allison, 2 axle or 3 ,smooth siding, stainless or Eagle siding, and a raised roof or standard roof so I would guess the standard bus would be around 29,500  hope this helps

Todd,
Have Dallas or Cat call down to Chattanooga to the shop they were at before heading up your way. They have scraped out several Eagles that I know of in the last yr. They can tell ya what yer looking at time/labor vs return wise as well as the ratio. I don't have the numbers to the shop, but I'd guess Dallas or Cat would.  FWIW  ;D  BK  ;D

Tell him not to worry about scraping it out just let it sit for awhile and it will slowly disappear.

Is this guy really thinking of scrapping this thing? He won't consider selling it to any of us who might want to try to save it, or at the very least use it for parts?

Thanks,
Dale
