Title: Hey Nick.
Post by: chazwood on April 06, 2008, 09:02:29 AM
I'm trying to fight the urge to resurrect a 120 day old post......(the red warning banner scared me )  so I just started a new one.

I noticed in your posts you talk about a Colman and Dometic Basement heat pump but I can't seem to locate specifics. Can you provide a dummy link for me?......(call me the missing link.)

Hi Chaz,

Basement heat pumps are an alternative to roof top and can give you a much quieter system.
Here is a start

Here are some pics of my units that are stacked useing 1/4 of my bay on the drivers side.

Total of 2 1/2 tons [30,000 btu's]  The second pic is after the installation of a Hydronic coil in the return
that is heated by a X45 Proheat diesel fired unit for redundant heat.

When I visit their web, all I see is the rooftop units. No pictures of basement units. I would like to see what is included in the package. ( this helps me understand whatall need to be done.)

Thanks

Hi Chaz,

I know, they have very little on the site.. That's because the installation of thees systems are not easy enough for the non HVAC consumer.

I have one on the shelf in the shop and I can take pictures and post them. If you look at the pics above, you can see where the supplies are.

[the two 6" flex ducts] They can either be ported from the side or the top. Then to your main trunk supply of your own configuration.

The return side is just behind the flexes where the hydronic coil and filters are. The return is ducted into my return tunnel of the coach and shares with OTR air.

The metal work behind the fire extinguisher is the hot condenser air discharge to under the coach. The smaller metal work front dead center is the condenser make-up

air, there is one on each side and that also picks up air from underneath in a different direction.

Hope this helps

Hi Guy's,

They are a few dollars more then roof tops.

Advantages- super quiet operation, customizeable, no dripping from your roof, clean roof lines, no heat load from the sun,
ability to direct air where you want it, & more efficient then rooftops without the sun beating on them.

Disadvantages- takes up bay space, costa a few dollars more, added expence of materials & labor to construct ducting.

Good Luck-

Chaz,

I think Nick also sells Mini Splits.  Advantage there is "NO DUCTS".  That was a serious feature for me to consider. 8)

Hi TF,

Ductless Mini Split Systems, where no duct work is needed. Available in single and multiple indoor units. They are now available with

variable speed compressors using inverter technology.

Would two inside units be enough, ya think?
Total of 24,000 BTU?
Maybe three? 36000?
cover me, or overkill?

I wonder how loud these things are.

Everyone else, turn your head for a second....

psss..........Nick....... do you sell them?

Nick- for cost reasons- why couldn't you take a roof top unit (like the Carrier low pro for space savings), mount it on a shelf in the baggage compartment and duct the fresh air and duct condenser air?  Roof tops are about $700.00 and the basements are at least 2 to 2.5 times that.  I'm thinking you could.  What do you think?  Good Luck, TomC

Sure Tom,

That could be done. That would take some of my fancy metal work to get it to breath properly..

But, The dometic basement HP's are not much more then the roof tops as you can find on my web site.

Thanks

Chaz,

You need to lookinto the mini's.  They are near silent and amt to little more than a 3 inch thick 2x2foot picture....without the picture.  The RV stuff has an inflated BTU rating so 12,000 BTU of house spected BTU performs 50 to 100% better than an RV.  Nick has said that the house stuff is not "ruggedized" like the RV stuff.  I am sure he is correct but I wonder how much that matters.  The house stuff is cheaper.  You will have to look for the 115V stuff and research reliability.  I can tell you that Nick told me my GOODMAN HP  purchase would be a nightmare and it is/was.  Don't consider that brand.

Do a search on MINISPLIT, MINI SPLIT and you should find KNUTS that have installed these things and swear by them.  You can't be anything but satisfied in your dealings with Nick.  Keep bugging him, I'm sure that will pay off ;D ::)

Lettuce know,

John
