Title: RV Unfriendly McDonough, GA
Post by: gus on March 23, 2008, 08:02:57 PM
If any of you receive the Good Sam magazine "Highways" look on page 21 and you will see that McDonough, GA is an RV unfriendly city. If anyone is heading that direction it might be a good idea to stay clear of ole' McDonough!! It is on I75 a few miles SE of Atlanta.

The letter from City Prosecutor Suzanne Whitaker says to me that;

1. The city does not want RVs. She brings up the old "environmental violations" issue so common to cities that don't want RVs, or

2. A member of the city council or a good friend of a member owns an RV park, or

3. The city is using RV parking violations as a good revenue source, or

4. She is not aware that parking at WalMart is not under city jurisdiction because it is private property. This issue came up in Missoula and Billings MT under similar conditions and

5. She knows absolutely nothing about RVs.

Local businesses probably do not know that they are or will be losing business because of this attitude.

She seems to enjoy sticking RVs with "hefty" parking fines as she mentions it a few times. Her letter is so confusing to me that I cannot possible understand their city parking rules and she says that ignorance of them is no excuse. Apparently there are no signs posted explaining these parking rules? This is a great attitude for a public official!

We plan a trip east in a couple of months and you can be sure that we won't be spending any of our fuel, food or tourist dollars in McDonough, GA!

As some of you may remember this same attitude was perceived  by RVers about Missoula and Billings, MT for a few years.  I sent both city councils emails complaining and both cities assured me that their rules had been misunderstood by both RVers and WalMart. I'm departing tomorrow for the west coast and plan to take copies of those emails with me just in case.

is there a place on this web site that letters like that can be posted for the future help of others?

I know that the ATRHS has pages like that for the members to view and print letters from diferent cities and states that might have a bearing on member when traveling thur.

Just a question.
