Title: Emergency stop?
Post by: Bob Gil on March 01, 2008, 06:47:00 PM
I have been searching the board and trying to find out what you guys are talking about when you refer to the flapper or Emergency stop.

I don't think I have that on my 6V53 or I don't know what I am looking for.

Below I will post pictures of the top of my engine where I assume it should be.  At this time the way I it has been started is with a button attached to the starter like you would use to bump one when working on it.  It starts very well.  But then the way they have for stopping it is by pulling the wire (clothes hanger or bailing wire not electrical) that you can see across the pictures.

can you guys tell me if I am missing some thing or it is not there.  Or what I should be looking for?

I have been getting the stuff together to get the air breath plumbed in brfore i drive it any where, that and getting the fuel going thuo the filters.  I pulled the old fuel filters off thursday had to use a hammer and chisel to cut one of them off did not have the time to mess with the other one then.

Thanks for putting up with my stupid questions.

First of all, no question is stupid! None of us can know everything, so we ask questions until we learn. ;)

I don't know about your 653, but on my 8v71 there is a rod that goes through the blower with a solenoid that releases a spring loaded catch, then the rod flips over and shuts off air supply.

Maybe Dallas or someone else who knows your 653 will chime in.

Good Luck,

Paul

Most 6v53 were not equipped with a shut down if you had one it would be where the intake pipe bolts to the blower  it was a option for the 6v53 and the 92 series DD engine  good luck

The shut off wire is just attached to the normal shut off side of the governor.  53 series did not have the emergency flapper valve, and you do not have it.  Good Luck TomC

Bob, your engine is not equipped with a emergency shut down, in some applications the 53 series had the emergency shut down  but not in yours.

Hi Bob,

With all said above, don't try and run your engine WITHOUT the air box.....  it may run away!

Good Luck

thanks to all I was about to go crazy trying to find it on my engine.  Is it some thing i should try to add?

I have heard some bad stories about DD and don't want to have any thing happen to one I am driving.

How should this engine be set up to shut down?  I don't see any thing that would shut it off when i get it wired?  Is there some thing there that will shut it down from the key?  Is it in the box that the throttle linkage goes to (and the wire that you now pull to kill it)?

I don't plan on running it until I can get the air breath duct work installed, I have most of it ready just have to put it in when I go down there the next time.  I am hoping I can bring it home then.

Most DD's that I've seen or read about use an air cylinder to push the governor (where the kill wire is rigged to right now) to the shut down position.  The air cylinder is controlled by a skinner valve (electrically controlled air valve).  Your's was  probably lost in the fire.

This post goes into more detail:

Bob, DD makes a shut down for the engines it's a all in one unit takes a power supply and air supply has a bracket to bolt to the governor housing and costs about 80.00 new from Stewart and Stevenson.you should find a used one at a wrecking yard the ones off the 6 and 8v92s are the same. I will try and email you a photo today of the unit Bob they also have a electric only shut down.

If you go to this web site and use the parts catalog it will be a great help to you

From the (early) GMC PD4104 and earlier for Parlor coaches and for many transit coaches, the air shut down wasn't used for the governor. What was used was a an electric solenoid and relay, just like the one for the reverse shift on the transmission.

This might be a much better option for you.

Good Luck!
