Title: Best Fuel Credit Cards?
Post by: CaliXbus on February 25, 2008, 01:23:13 PM
I run a fleet of up to 4 mc9's per week averaging about 600miles per week/bus. With the escalating diesel prices I could really use an amazing gas card with either cash or fuel rebates. Any suggestions?

Yeah share the info when ya find one! I do suggest that ya check into a card thru the "Flying J network" they have it's thru their bank and is a debit card, but it's easy to load $ into that account and ya can use it anywhere and gets cash price at the "J" and earns "Flying J frequent fueler points no matter where ya use it (obviously more at "J's" than elsewhere). I used to use it when I had trks, what I liked about it was I could take a comchek from a broker and deposit it into the acount and then fuel at Flying J's where I couldn't use comchek's. FWIW! ;D  BK  ;D

PS I can't convince dad that it's the way to go is the only reason we don't use them for our buses!

ACK!

You still buying fuel retail?

Get a hold of the fuel companies that would be convenient for you to use, and compare what they will offer.

Check all the resources at your local truck stops to see what might be available in co-ops and the like.

You will have to stick to one at that volume for any chance at an adjustment. You're using the same amount of fuel as one long haul truck.

Given the $3.50 average for diesel fuel, if you pay with your Discover Card with it's 5% cashback on fuel purchases, you're getting it $0.20+ 'cheaper' than pump price.

The problem with Citi, Chase, and most fuel rebate cards is they are only good for generally $300 a year in rebates.  Also, Citi has gone from 5% to 3% for most accounts and I didn't know if Chase will still give out the 5% or if they only do the 3% card now.

Amex may have some cards that are unlimited on the rebates.

Chase gives out 1 reward point for every dollar spent normally or 5 reward points for every dollar spent on fuel or groceries.  30,000 reward points is max, and I lost 10,000 reward points last year as I was remodeling my house and then buying fuel for the bus.  Every 10,000 points is $100 cash they send you.

Not that its quite inline with this thread, but I just ran thru Arizona last weekend...twice I filled up at Loves, at $3.49 (a "real" truck stop)
The last time I filled up at a non-franchized place, and they had a separate isle for "RV ONLY", in the truck area.  I pulled in there to find that fuel was $3.29 instead of the $3.49 listed on the sign.  I asked the guy inside, and he said, "yeah, no road tax for you RV guys, that's only for the truckers"

Interesting.  So at least in Arizona, be careful where you fill....Loves certainly won't tell you that...

Cheers

Dan, a killer is the State of Oregon they post a price and when you go to pay they add .25 cents a gallon because you are a RV

Flying J just upped all their benefits and I think you can get as much as 30 cents per gallon off now if you use a lot. Every penny helps so I show my card even if I just go in for a Coke.

I know you meant credit cards but the loyalty cards are a good deal too. They are free to get and you get credits for things you will buy anyway.

I use my American Express for fuel. It's a points card instead of a rebate card so every few months I can get some cool goodies for free.

Careful...

The commercial tax exemption does not apply if you are (1) over 26,000 or (2) have more than 2 axles.  If you look at the non-commercial diesel pumps (RV and auto islands at truck stops, all islands at normal gas stations) there is a sticker right on the pump that says the pump price does not apply to you and it is unlawful to use the pump.  If you are caught, the penalties are stiff.

OTOH, if you fuel at the truck island at any truck stop but are entitled to the exemption, go inside to pay.  Tell them you are non-commercial, under 26,000, and two axles and they will give you the discount off the pump price.

Oregon and Indiana both levy extra tax if you are not a truck (where "truck" means you have a PUC or DOT number).  Here again, auto and RV islands will reflect that tax in the pump price, but truck islands will not.  To fuel at the truck island, you will need to pay at the fuel desk, and they will asses the extra tax.

A comment about paying a 3 cent penalty for using a credit card.

You can get a Flyin J card for free as an RV.  Then, you can use this card to get 1/2% off of diesel AND you will get the cash price even when you use a credit card.  BTW, Flyin J  will not accept Visa any longer at their truck island.

So, I use a Citi Master Card, with 3% rebate at Flying J.

Here is the new (effective Feb 1) discount schedule for the Flying J RV loyalty card. Yes, it does have monthly limits but every little bit helps. And has been said, it is a free card.

I prefer to use the commercial Frequent Fueler rebate card at Flying J.

The free shower for fueling is worth $6, far more than the RV program discount on the fuel purchase.

all depends how you operate.

Yeah, that would be better if you used their showers. For me, the RV card gives me what I want.

Plus you still get the points! The debit card I was refering to is infact still a frequent fueler card, but it is also a debit card for a Flying J's banking service account. I found it very handi to be able to use as a credit card, & frequent fueler card. What was great was that I could use it ANYWHERE, and still racked up frequent fueler points.
