thought I would pass this for some of you guys looking for generators in the 6kw to 7.5 range.Today at a auction I purchased 4 of the portable light towers, 3 6.0 kw with Kubota 3 cylinder water cooled engines with 2003 hrs to 3128 hrs and one wrecked 7.5 with a Kubota engine with 267 hrs for less than 2 grand with the buyers fee.you may want to check out your local rental stores they may have a good buy on 1 they are replacing. these are all 1800 rpm generators. If I did not have a use for mine I would be glad to share with you.Just a option for the ones that don't want to spend big buck for a generator
decent purchase, but keep in mind non Marine and non Vehicle designed units are generally much louder...and I can almost assure you that they will not meet USFS sound standards....as most don;t meet osha sound standards
Luver,
Nice job! I'll bet with an outlay of $500 so far you have a lot of bucks left in your genny budget for sound proofing. With selling the remaining three on spec you could get the "keeper" so quiet that a guy wouldn't know if it was running unless he was carrying it. ;D
I mean it...nice job. I'll let you do ALL my shopping. ::)

Oh.. Grow up...
Most of the stuff we all do may not "meet" some standard somewhere.
Bus Nuts are a creative bunch. We know how to silence a kubota, That's the easy part.
Silencing a nay-sayer, That is more challenging. If you can't find the good in something why insist on harping on your version of the bad of anything anyone else does.?
Sorry, I don't get it....
well, Someone needs to be a voice of reason and or devils advocate.
I am just pointing out a fact......
lots of people like to camp in state and federal parks and forests. And They do do sound checks as well as spark arrestor checks....particularly in the South West.
Not to mention just the loudness to your own ears.
No Need to get pissy with me....I am stating fact and my opinion.
If you don;t care for what I have to say don;t read my posts!
to further clarify where I am getting my info,
1.worked for the Forest Service for many years and styill have freinds working for them.
2. I have a freind who has one of these light towers Kubota 3 cyl.....makes awesonm light and is perfect for that use.......but I can hear the thing 1/4 mile away.....and by no means would I want to have it right next to me for any amount of time.
now this is just me.......I also don;t camp in a steel tent, or have old house furniture as furniture in my coaches
I find it amazing what can be done when a person opens their mind and approaches a problem from a different angle, most busnuts just don't have deep enough pockets to go into an rv supply house and load up anything they want, so we barter, we scrounge, and we trade for things that we can adapt to do the job we want it to do. I have a lot of admiration for people that can get a good deal on something and then modify or adapt it to be whatever they were looking for, thats a rare talent, often and unfortunately, people are crippled by a lack of creativity and just give up and say something just can't be done, this only serves to do themselves a disservice and discourages others from "thinking outside the box". I realize that sometimes a person is in a postion where money is no object and for them it's great but I'm not one of them so I watch posts and enjoy seeing someone overcome a problem with good old american engenuity.
luvrbus,
FWIW,
I have kubota 20 KW that I purchased -- slides, air ride the whole deal, insulated exhaust special silencer, i placed it in a custom box paid 600 for a three layer multi density fire rated insulating mats -- can just hear it hmmm inside the coach -- do not know if it is national park certified or osha approved -- i do know that is quieter than those prevost coaches that entertainers use. I also have several of those light towers that you have purchased -- Ironically to me they appear to be basically the same -- just a smaller version -- you can buy those light towers sound attenuated or not -- but if you buy them sound attenuated you get a much better muffler ... all of mine have the louder mufflers ... if you placed a better muffler on it -- placed in a box -- remoted the radiator -- and sound attenuated i bet you could go anywhere --- (BYTW i paid 8k for my kubota -- looks to me you are way a head) i believe on this board that we call ourselves busnuts -- which i like to think of as innovators -- -i like your idea and if i did want a genset that was a large as i have i would have followed your lead --
i think that it is cool that people point out ideas and possible issues -- especially if they are dangerous -- but like my dad has always has said "listen to everyone and DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO"
if i can help in anyway - i would be happy to ...
dp
dp. your 20kw was that an industrial model.
Generators come in a variaety of configs
Industrial, Home Emergecy, Mobile (RV), Constant Use, Marine, Military all have different specs etc.
I have heard Kohler Home Emergency unbit with the same engine as a mobile unit.......worlds of difference.
I concur.....listen to everyone and do it your way....I know a guy who slapped a Welding generator in his bus......he's happy with it would i do or suggest it....Nope
Hey guys I just made the post to inform you guys about a lost cost option for a generator. I don't need one for my bus it has a 15kw in it. I purchased the towers for a project that the CORP requires me to have them on standby for about 6 months. The tag on the generators read
meets all EPA emissions standards
meets USFS requirements( equipped with spark arrestors )
meets all OSHA standards
approved for hazardous locations
the dba rating on the 3- 6kw is 69 at 23 ft (the USFS is 102 dba)
the dba rating on the 7.5 is 71 at 23ft this one I thought was a Kubota but is a CAT 3011 engine( never knew CAT made a 20hp engine) I still think it's a good option for a bus conversion for the price and when I am finshed using them you guys that need one will get a bargain since you know what I paid for them
cool, got good ones then.
they come in all sorts of specs.
tekebird,
I really do not know -- i bought it to be a moible unit for a rv - these guys sell to people with coaches and converters .... it had the silde and air isolators installed when it arrived -- all i had to do was mount it in the bay that i had insulated -- came with the flexiable exhaust -- i also purchased the remote control panel -- had the pigtail -- how would one tell -- it has over 400 hours in three trips -- wish everything i had ran as good as this unit --
but the engines appear to be same on this unit and my light towers -- BIG difference in the mufflers and sound attentuation -- wish i would have spent the extra 250.00 and remoted the radiator -- i doubt that you could have heard it run on the otherside of the coach if i had done this -- i will probably go back and change this one day ---

All diesel gensets start out as loud. Without any muffler or soundproofing or anything else to keep them quiet. It is up to the manufacturer/assembler (and I used to be one) to add the appropriate sound suppressing equipment to quiet them down to the desired level necessary for the job.
The hardest job I ever had was manufacturing some units for the movie industry. I went so far as to dis-assemble the alternator, remove the paddle wheel type fan, and cut about two inches off the radius. Made a significant difference in the level of noise. I later developed a propeller type fan and had it cast from aluminum to even further quiet the systems.

Hey DParker, do you have a website for the place you purchased from??
