Title: Any ideas to insulate a fiberglass cap?
Post by: belfert on February 19, 2008, 10:05:16 AM
The entire rear of my bus along with the first three or four feet of the roof at the rear is all one enormous fiberglass cap.  Parts of the cap have some steel bracing which is insulated, but the majority is just plain fiberglass with no insulation.

Any ideas to insulate this?  I can actually feel the heat difference back there during the summer.  (The area is mostly converted to a closet/storage area with no door.)  Those DIY foam kits might work, but I am hoping to spend less than the $200+ for one of those kits.

That foam kit is probably your best bet.  If there are large areas that are flat, you might put some of the 2" foam board (or thinner) from home depot and seal / fill in the edges and gaps with spray foam.

Also possible, but less satisfying to me would be to put foam board on the outside and cover it with a skin.  If its on the flat part of the roof, it wouldn't show and you'd not lose headroom.

Belfert,
Do you already have a headliner installed?  If not, a spray foam contractor is the best way to go.  If you only want to do those sections, see if you can coordinate with one to take your bus to their existing job site.  Good luck!

No headliner.  The bus is insulated with spray foam from the factory except for the rear cap.

The spray foam folks I have dealt with for my house charge a $400 minimum.  I don't know if it would be less if I went to their place as I suspect most of it is equipment setup and cleanup time.  I might be able to take the bus to a location they are spray foaming and have them do the bus at the same time as the rest of the project.

Brian,

I'm going to try to find a foam contractor in this area this spring to do my front and rear caps. I'm hoping to find someone I can take the but to and get a good price. Maybe I can take it to their jobsite and they won't have to do multiple setups. If you're interested, I'll let you know. Maybe we can get a better price if we have a couple buses there.

Craig/Brian,
I know a guy who sells the foam insulation product to installation contractors. I'm sure I could get a name or two from him. Let me know when you get closer to wanting to have the work done.
