Good find...  It's a CC-100 which delivers 737 ft pounds of torque- that's exactly the size I have in my Bluebird (29ft).  With a 6000 pound trailer and a loaded 27,000# GVW bus, it works really well.  Amazingly actually.

Installation of this one is a snap as long as you have a long driveshaft.  You simply have the shaft cut,  stick the Telma between the frame rails, bolt it and the shorter driveshaft up, hook up a few wires and away you go.  It's about a solid day's worth of work.  Many 3/4" holes to drill into the frame (ugh)

The only issue you may have is U joint size.  I don't know what this one has but if it's smaller than the ones you might need, you may be faced with $800 or so worth of new Telma flanges.  They are totally available in many sizes but they ain't cheap...

Oh, also note that this one is 24 volts.  It is totally possible to rewire the magnets to 12 volts, as they just hook coils in series or parallel to make the difference.  But the controller is a different story.  You'd likely have to replace it to make it tick on 12 volts.  The simple way, not so elegant though, is to just use four continuous duty solenoid contactors and work it manually with switches on the dash. You'll need some antiparallel diodes as well- if you buy this and need help ask me, I've done it all....

Cheers

I posted this for others that might want it.  Although my MC5a is 24v, I am sure there would not be room for it in the drive line.  About 12 years ago I knew a guy that dealt in used school buses.  He had one with a Telma brake on it.  He sold me on how great they were and offered to sell me that one for $500.  Unfortunately, someone came by the next day and bought the whole bus as is.

Thanks  Lin...But don't stop looking yet.
I'm in the market for a focal mount, 12V, Telma. Already on a 4:11ish Eaton axle would be a LARGE bonus.
I'd buy an entire bus if it was cheap enough, use what I need and send the rest to scrap.

Jay,

I assume that the "focal mount" is the version that mounts to the differential.  Does this version take up less of the drive shaft length?  Will it be compatible with the MCI 9?

Thanks,

John

John,

That is correct regarding the focal mount attaching to the rear axle.

If you go to the Telma site, you can download the selection guide. I would email it to you, but it's 72MB of .pdf

All rear engine buses can only use Telma Focal (not the inline) version that mounted onto differential housing.
They compact (shorter) and no self-contain carrier bearing but relied on pinion's bearing to support twin disc.

Most a transit buses has them.

No takers at this time.
Maybe they will drop the starting bid and let the market decide it's worth.
If it'd work for me as is, I'd make them an offer on it, because a new one is quite a bit more!

I do not think that the ebay one is a focal unit, but it closed without bids.

The ebay one is definitely NOT a focal mount.  It can only be mounted between drive shafts.

The focal mount units take up around 2-3" of driveshaft

It's definitely worth the money the guy is asking tho.  These are closer to $6k new....

Just for further information, Klam retarders (Western Star Trucks has them as an option from the factory) out of Denver, Co also has a similar unit to the Telma.  Good Luck, TomC
