If so, what is your choice of carry weapon?
Sig Sauer .40 or an HK .40, and a shotgun.
Howitzer, 50cal saw and a blunderbus for for killing mice. ;D No permit, no weapons, no brains.
My choice is a S&W M39, a .22 revolver or Sig P239 unless I want to carry an AK :D.
I am not as accurate with a .45 but I've only shot large frame, maybe I'd be better with a smaller frame?
Never shot a .40 but heard the recoil is nasty and loads are $$
Don't usually carry in the city but I'm rethinking that lately, cop friends tell me scary stories and that I should. Always carry on the road. In the bus will be Winchester 1300 for going out in the boonies.
If you search you will find this was covered in a past thread. The answers ranged from shotguns to flare guns. There are also many who probably carry but don't want to put that info in a public forum.
I was fortunate and worked in a gun store for a few years. I have quite the choice should I decide to carry.
The right gun to carry is
A. The one you can control and hit what you aim at. (Misses don't count)
B. The one you will actually have with you as opposed to the one at home that you hate to lug around.
The long winded answer to your question is if I did it would be something in a 40ish.... unless it is revolver day then generally a 357.
I have a NC Concealed Carry Permit (CCP) which is honored in all States except IL. For some reason there must not be any crime in that state or if there is they don't care to do anything about it....and DC. which will never allow law abiding citizens to carry weapons....Egads! If they did...there wouldn't be any population left!
My personal weapon of preference is a Model 23 Glock in .40 Caliber with a built in Laser sight. In the event of a confrontation the dropping of the laser on the bridge of the nose usually effects an Immediate AAP.
(Attitude Adjustment Period)
I do plan on getting a small .38 wheel gun just so I can rat shot close at hand in the event I need to return order to some crazy chaotic situation involving close quarters.

Funny thing is I carried for work but almost never did off-duty. I really like the H&K 40 Compact, variant 1. It does not have a lot of recoil at all. It is true rounds are more expensive than a 9mm, but there are good reloads available for practice that are not that costly. For self defense purposes you will have to have something really high quality, but you don't really use those up, so it is not a real expense. It is said that you do not want to use target rounds for self defense since it takes more rounds to do the job. If you ever use a weapon, it will be treated as a criminal investigation, and the more rounds you've used, the crazier some people will think you are. If you plan to carry for protection from bus-invasion, you might consider a shotgun. The sound of it raking may be enough to chase intruders away. Anyway, this is a deadly serious consideration that is not one to go cowboy on. The way things work, even if you win, you could loss big time. I have seen devices that are alarms that, when triggered, sound like a big dog barking. I have also heard of people putting a huge dog bowl by there door with a name like "Killer" monogrammed on the side. Put a pair of dirty, worn size 15 boots next to that and maybe no one will want to disturb you and Killer.
I have a GA CCW and usually carry a Sig .40. Once we finally have a bus, I think we will travel with my wife's shotgun as well. It is a Mossberg 500 Home Defense which has had a second pistol grip attached.
Speaking of carrying...

I have a michigan permit, but I find the most terrifying super crimnal will run and beg for mercy if I tell my wife he has said bad things about her cooking, after telling her that, I quietly say a small prayer for the poor doomed individual and hope that she has the common sence to at least hide the body. In the event I'm home alone when this arch criminal decides to attack with a vengence, my secondary line of self defense is an extensive slide show of my grand kids birthday parties.
s/w .40 (with back up)
semi jacket hollow points...GO BIG OR GO HOME
i think the revolver might be better when your defending your self,i have never had a revolver jam,but with the semi that can happen and that could mean life or death.also with the semi your spring in the clip will wear down after sitting around fully loaded for long periods of time so you might not get that last round out! something to think about!

I tote a Walther PPKS .380 and the Mrs carries a Beretta Tomcat .32 I also keep a S&W Model 629 .44 Magnum beside the bed.... Just in case....
A bum jumped in the open door of my bus last winter in San Deigo. We are still laughing. Our German Shephard ripped about half his arm off before he escaped!
I don't have a Concealed Weapons Permit because my guns are all too big to conceal (Ruger Blackhawks 357, 44 Mag, and 45 Long Colt). Florida law states weapon must be concealed. But they do stay inside the bus aling with the 12 Ga. Pump. Jack
Next to my bus hobby there is my gun hobby. NEVER get enough of either! I guess I am marching to a different drummer, my preferred CCW is a Ruger SP101 357mag. Always works, and I don't have to pick up the spent shells. ;)

"The .357 Magnum, in Remington or Federal JHP, 125 grains, is unquestionably the most effective handgun cartridge in existence. Its proven ability to produce one shot stops exceeds that of any other round, including more powerful cartridges such as the .41 Magnum and .44 Magnum."
Custom Remington high capacity 870 when I need to show-and-mow. Makes the bad guys cry like little babies. :'(
Better buy what you have always wanted now, it looks like neither the Dems nor Repubs, are not going to be very gun friendly this next go around.

My main alarm is Lexie, she keeps the peace for the most part. Great pillow and car alarm in one package!

Although you are right in saying the you would not want your dog to face an armed attacker, I read a survey that concluded that most people are more afraid of an angry dog than an armed man. The hope is that the dog's presence discourages anyone from bothering you in the first place.

What ever your preference It should be something you practice with often and spouse also.
Carry the Mossberg 500 Home Defender w/ pistol grip and short (legal) barrel. Don't want to ever have to use it on someone, but will gut shoot if necessary.
Has to be comfortable to carry, and able to conceal under summer clothes. Bad guys are not impressed by the big gun you have back in the glove box of your pickup! Bersa .380 with jacketed hollow points, nice gun! As already mentioned, practice a lot, and read up enough to scare the hell out of you about having to use it! Even if you are correct and right to use it on an intruder, it looks like one expensive, long drawn out nightmare. I have read stories on the difference made in court between using double-ought and home defense loads. It helps to be able to make a case for intent i guess. I have been thinking about the new .410 home defense shotguns as a bedroom gun. I agree about the chilling effect of hearing a pump action being jacked, but again i have read of the sound just broadcasting your location to the intruder. Interesting too, are the stories from people who have discharged a 12 ga in the small confines of a bus. They said it was like a stun grenade going off, and was very blinding/disorienting to the shooter. So i would be interested in hearing from anyone who has the .410. And one question i have - i thought i had heard that at least for Minnesota, if you have RV plates on the bus, you do not need a permit to have firearms in the bus, it is the same as for your home. You don't need a permit to have firearms in your home. Is this true in other states as well?
I have the mossburg home defender in 410, it's got a very effective pattern and is very friendly for anyone to use. One of the benefits of it is that it is very easy to justify as a snake gun. As far as home intruders go, we've never had an instance where we've had any kind of a problem in that area and hopefully never will. I spend most of my life in law enforcement working both in the corrections area and in road work so I've carried most of my life and have the permits and experience to be legal in all aspects but the appeal has long since diminished, however, the fear of snakes is still strong lol. Anything bigger than an earthworm is enough to stop my heart lol.
Interesting thread, as I am right now considering purchasing a "carry weapon". I have several long guns - both varieties - and a few hand guns, but all too large to carry.
It is my guess something around the size of the Walther PP or other brand (Sig, Taurus, etc) would be a good choice to "carry". But at this point before I buy one, I am definitely paying attention to what you guys think. I know everyone has their preference, I'm just curious as to why.
By the way, my local gun shop had an old style Walther but he said it was a "hand skinner". I guess the action likes to skin the webbing between your thumb and fore finger.
Chaz
My choice will surprise you and you may disagree. That's fine with me, each person must make their own decisions. But first let me tell a little background. I've owned several guns over the years and sold most of them prior to full timing. I once had a 12ga Mossberg pistol grip like the one BusCrazyTom mentioned. That thing was an animal. Unfortunately it was stolen long ago. I've also had a 410 Browning shotgun, a .30 caliber Universal carbine with a 30 round clip (that was my favorite, most accurate rifle I ever fired), a .22 caliber Iver Johnson carbine, .45 caliber Colt Combat Commander (loved that one too) and a .22lr Jennings J-22 pocket pistol.
Out of all these choices, I kept the .22lr pp for full-timing. Why you might ask. It seems too light to be a good choice. Indeed, for absolute stoping power and my love of the weapon, I would have preferred to keep the .45 with hollow points. But that little Jennings can fire 3 rounds of .22lr in the time the colt could cycle once. It has no kick to speak of, keeping close range grouping very tight. It has never jambed in all the times I've fired it. It has minimal sound level, good for tight enclosures. It is very small and light making it easy to carry when and where desired. And finally, and very important, a stray shot won't take down a neighbor by accident. But 3 rounds of .22 ricocheting around in the rib cage of an aggressor should cause enough trauma to halt their approach, if not, there are still 3 more just as fast.
In any case, if you ever have to use it, you will have a serious legal battle ahead. Even if they find it a justifiable self defense homicide, if you were anywhere that guns are illegal (COE/state/county campgrounds, DC, etc.), they'll still nail you for that and you may see significant jail time/fines. But you and your family will still be alive.
As for trouble at the door, a good can of bear spray is an excellent, non-lethal choice that is legal to have in all campgrounds that I know of.

All I can say about is CA. If you have your vehicle plated as a house-car which is different than registering it as an RV. The house-car registration denotes the vehicle as your primary residence and most of your rights are the same as in a physical non moving house would be. It's especially true with search and siezure. They really need a warrant to step through the doorway of a bus.
RV and passenger tags do not bring you the same protection in the state of CA. an RV is looked at in the same way as a passenger car would be under CA laws. Of course they would need a warrant in either one of those circumstances to open a locked box, but they can still look in plain sight after entering. My personal take is I don't intentionally do anything illegal in my life, but I don't know every law. So it's easier just to avoid the situation.
As per being on the road since 1977 I've never been involved in an instance where I would need a fire arm. I also think that sometimes having what people would call having protection might promote some actions that are riskier than they would do if they didn't have a piece on them (ie places to park overnight, etc.).

In my most humble opinion those people who behave like that are weeded out via natural selection by the police or the bad guys. I am more cautious with or without and take steps to be careful even walking downtown that we wouldn't have done before the local Trolley Square shooting as remote of incident as it was. I still don't normally carry in public places, it's on the road on out away from society where there are no cops to call. With or without a weapon I'm getting out of Dodge when trouble hits...unless I'm trapped. I'm no Superman or cowboy and the goal should be that nobody should ever see that you are carrying anything so they should never see you pull it out either.
Anyone who places themselves in a situation will sooner or later end up dead or in jail.
Agreed.
A couple years ago, Florida passed what has been referred to as the "Kill Bill". Essentially the law says you have the right to shoot anyone who forcibly enters your house or vehicle. You cannot be held criminally or civilally liable. Home invasions and car jackings have decreased greatly since the bill became law. Jack
PS: Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

In the bus I always have enough fire power to finish the job. Be safe out there.
I carry a Kel Tek 9 when it has to be locked inside a vehicle...that way if it gets stolen, minimal loss (that's a hell of an attitude? But society is so screwed up these days you can about expect that your property will be dinked with). Also carry a Glock 40 or 9 (depends one whether one wishes to have legal 19 round mag) mostly in cool weather since they are a good bit larger frame weapons that require heavier clothing to conceal. The little Kel Tek is easily concealable and holds 10 rounds. Like Glocks and other better firearms ( ;)) it doesn't have a safety. Safetys will get you killed. These are weapons ready to use. A Kel-Tec with a round in the chamber is ready to shoot. Double action. No rack necessary. Same with a Glock.
The stopping power of a 40 cal is undebateable, but some 9mm rounds are puny. Get Plus hollow rounds for carry, but use standard ball ammo for targets.
Carrying a firearm with an empty chamber, or safety on (which really is a necessity with a round in the chamber of handguns with safeties) is too slow to bare into action. OK...let the debate begin! ::)
I haven't read all of the posts (I will), but regarding firearms in RVs, most states still view RVs as motor vehicles. Every state has a its own rules regarding firearms and especially short-arms. Take the time to join Grass-Roots or NRA and you'll find all the info to safely deal with each state...should it become necessary. A motor home is subject to search and any contraband such as guns and recreational medications (both of which the cop dogs find quite easily)
will get you a felony charge...maybe. A lot of law enforcement will confiscate the firearm and let folk that were not otherwise involved in criminal activity walk...or ride. But they can screw you up too.
Odd laws abound....North Carolina allows handguns to be transported as long as the firearm is visible..on the dash..really visible. South Carolina require that they be locked up. This assumes no CC permit. With a CC you can carry a handgun in a vehicle any way you wish...as long as no alcohol, and you don't violate the host states CC laws. That's another thing to watch for.
I carry, and I know in some states we drive through, illegally. Those are the states where one needs protection. Most east coast states from Va to Fla have reciprocity. Those are my favorite states to travel in. Virginia had some serious anti firearm welcome signs at the borders. I though that "Project Exile" would be a bad way to spend a good part of my life. Still, not going bare! I'm a paranoid old fart! >:(
As has been said, "better to be judged by 12..." is right on in my opinion. I don't want my family harmed. Whatever it takes.
BTW, never carry an undeclared firearm into Mexico or Canada...and you ain't going into either with handguns.
Always follow the golden rule: Do unto others...before they do unto you!
That's my one page answer to a one sentance question! JR
This just came to mind:
"Oh, and I don't have an "S" on my chest. I'm down with you cats if the play calls for it, but otherwise... I ain't into violence."
Glenn Fry, Miami Vice, Smugglers Blues.
Sums up my attitudes. ;D
I was going to buy another handgun but I think I've decided on another AK or AR since they may get very expensive and hard to obtain coming up here after an election....another O.T thread though I guess.
Great plinkin' guns though!
I have a different technique.
After a few months of spending my Senior class Trip in Beautiful SE Asia, I had the chance to discharge a weapon in anger, self defense and antagonistically, many many times.
Since that time, I've come to have a new respect for human life, even the lives of the scum that really should have been victims of parental sterilization.
I have great faith in the use of a Very (Veri, Verri, Verry) pistol.
While it possible, and highly likely that an attacker inside the bus could be shot with anything from a .22 up to a .50 Desert Eagle and still be able to continue the attack, I defy anyone to continue an attack when they have a burning chunk of phosphorus sticking to their clothes and skin.
After that it's just a decision of whether to call the police or simply slit the perpetrators throat and let it bleed out peacefully.

I like that idea a lot. Probably even legal to have on board. "It's just a flare gun in case I get lost hiking."
Dallas.....you are gonna burn your bus down...or up...however buses burn! Miss the perp and Cat's gonna 'burn' your a$$...! :o ;D :D ::)
For sure, a 12 ga flare pistol should get the attention of any evil-doer! ;D ;D ;D
I kept a marine emergency signal can (had a 12 ga flare pistol and long timed flares) attached to the doghouse for years. No one ever looked inside the can. Figured I'd have one opportunity to act stupid (easy for me) if caught with the thing. This was before firearms were considered vogue. Hey, it was a plan.
Used to wonder whether engine heat would cause the rounds or flares to ignite...they never did...but I thought about it. I'm probably lucky to be alive! ;)
If you're using flare rounds, those things oughta be wasted every couple of years on July 4th, and replaced with new rounds. I've read that flare rounds age and become unstable...? Maybe someone knows about this claim?
Love and peace, JR

According to the Coast guard the flares must be replaced within one year of their expiration date. Most flares are rated for a 3 year lifespan.
Interestingly, the easiest way to put out a phosphorus fire is to submerge it in rubbing alcohol, (from what I've been told).
Once the phosphorus is no longer burning, the rest of the fire shouldn't be too hard to extinguish.
It might be fun to pour rubbing alcohol on a burning perp, just as a gesture of good will and human kindness! ;D
Mike, If they don't ask, I won't tell! Besides, I've been to New York so I don't have any plans present or future to enjoy the facilities of that great state, Home of the Clintons! ;)

Hey, I have a CZ 52 that I bought for $112...new, sorta. It is armory stamped as a "sellect". My rest targets are milk jugs at 100 yards. Shoots an 88 grain little 32 (7.62 mm) cal bullet, which ain't much, but it does it at 1,700 ft/sec. I hold on center for anything out to 100 yards so it doubles as a rifle. It is the LOUDEST pistol anyone ever heard at the pistol range, or so they say with a pained expression on their face. Recoil is doable. I'll leave it to you all to look up the ft pounds of energy that tiny bullet has. Now it will, I learned this after my purchase, defeat light body armor. Imagine the look on the well dressed perp's face when he discovers that salient fact. It is, sad to say, the ugliest pistol EVER made but the Hoag gripps dress it up.
Do I carry that CZ with me? Absolutely NOT! I just call out for John Law whever I am if there is even the hint of life threatening trouble at a remote campsite or whever. I also do not carry a shotgun with me either. Nor a 300 meter target rifle in 6.5 x 55 MM that will keep their heads down at 500 yards. That isn't a flat shooter but it will group at less than an inch at 100 yards and it is 100 years old. Ammo is brand new though.
Some of you may wish to take a more agressive stance and more power to you. To each his own.

PP,
Yeah, pass the word....please.
I had a semi serious verbal confrontation with a hippie type with a pit bull at our local dog park. Place is full of little Terriers, Poodles and the like. STUDLY was about to set loose a 95 pound pit that was showing serious behavior issues and which he said had been fought and the massive scars on his head were the proof to me that he was serious. I quietly informed said Hippie that I would cut his arm off if that monster killed my Terrier. He said "you are outa yer fxxxing mind you old fuxx". I replied "That is my point. You think you are the only lunatic running around loose out here and that isn't true". Guess he believed me. He left abruptly with Sudden Death or Blood Bath or whatever he called that thing and half the people present put down their dogs to continue play. The other half stopped chasing theirs and trying to save them. That guy had a 12 inch hunting knife on his belt. Yeah, pass the word....gunpowder isn't the only thing that gets unstable with age.
In Florida I was told to "WATCH OUT FOR THE BLUE HAIR". They were talking about the 70 year old women drivers coming home from the beauty shop. They get a lot of respect, also.
Hope you found this amusing or ??? Crazy works with some people sometimes. I have a talent.

Dang. I hate to hear that you would consider that psycho a hippie! I have been refered to as a hippie, once or twice, ::) (true or not) ;D and from growing up in the '60's and '70's I would kinda consider them a bit more passive. But then again, a person shouldn't pigeon hole others.
As an avid lover of dogs (even as I am hurridly writing this, my 6mo. old Blue Heeler, Roo, busted some serious wind and I GOTTA get outta here!!!!!!!!!!) that guy should have probably had a cap busted in his @$# and his dog given to Ceasar Milan for rehabilitation. ;D (yeah baaaaaby!!!)

I love that. Years ago I was in Chicago for a trade show. A couple of others and I were were walking between clubs one evening. A young punk approached us with a knife and talking crap. I had eye contact with him and told him that I had killed so many times for my country that I wouldn't mind killing him and that he could walk away and live, approach and die. He postured for another moment, then got more nervous and walked away cursing something about crazy people.
Fortunately it worked. But I wouldn't recommend this approach to anyone. I had been to a club and had a few drinks. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have tempted fate like that. But, sometimes crazy does work. Unfortunately, when it doesn't your screwed.
It always helps, when you come across the "criminally" insane, to lead them to believe that YOU are crazier than THEM, they will not screw with you cause no "sane" person would (unfortunately if you come across a "totally" insane person your in real trouble). You can prove your insanity by the Dirty Harry method (above) or simply start drooling and muttering incoherently while making occassional loud incomprehensible rantings about 'voices' (the Rain Man method) - HTH
.....or just poop your pants! No one will want your wallet after that ;D
Niles,
Sure it helps. Sometimes CRAZY is all you got to put between THEM and yours. "Yours" are worth it and we all have responsibilities.
That was a great story and you have some nut to thank for it. Go figure. Thank you for sharing that.
If you ever saw a movie called "A Bronx tale" you will remember a scene where the hero locked himself in his bar with a gang of bikers that were tearing the place up for sport. As he did so he said quietly "there, now you'ns CAN'T leave". They were sure he was nuts. Great movie for that scene alone.
Shiny side up,
John
