Title: 4905 up date and more????
Post by: mike davis on February 07, 2008, 04:52:17 PM
Hello people from the wide wide world of BUS.

I don't really watch football, my sport is bus.

Went over today and got a lot of things checked out.  She mostly held air when I pumped it into it, but I didn't have my batteries with me, because here in Nowhere the rent all place decided to close one of its branches, and wouldn't you know it would be the closest one to the bus.  So, I had to go 45 miles round trip out of my way to a place that I had already been to go get the air compressor.

I noticed when I was there I had a leak in the drivers side rear brake drum.  The air pedal for the brakes was frozen, blown whatever, corrosion issue, probably off the windshields (10 years sitting).  And the air governor, but that goes with the air compressor in the coach anyways.

Does anyone know the rise on the air bags when the coach pumps up?  Reason why I ask is because the coach is sitting @$# down on a hill, also tilted toward the entry door.  So, of course if I had to pick a way to not be able to judge the air ride, the coach was sitting in one.  What I did see, was when I could get up underneath the coach was the air bags were inflated I saw marks on the pistons????? I can't remember the name of it.  What the air bags sit on and when the air bags inflate, rises off of.

House systems started everything but the generator--no batteries-- but I will go over in the morning and see.  So I need some advice.  There was some floor corrosion, but the floor is not falling out of it.

Now I'll say a little history about me and buses.  I've been involved since 1977 in buses.  Now this will probably make or break me on this board.  I grew up touring with the Grateful Dead.  Our trip was taking truly antique buses (i.e. 1930's 1940's stock buses and running them 20,000 miles in 45 days.  As an example how about a '38 white with cable and pulley brakes?  Diamond Rio's etc?  We also concentrated on the last large straight six gasolines.  International 501 is an example.  Then we stepped up into diesels.  TDM, worked on a 4501, one series I can't remember, an MCI4 which I hated (what is MCI and acronym for? Machine Constantly Idle, whereas GMC is an acronym for Great Cruising Macine).  Well, who'd I piss off with that?

I believe all buses have a heart and soul.  Breath life into the great machine and the one I'm looking at now for some reason "feels right".  I don't know what else to say about it.  Maybe it's the way it smells?  The way the diesel exhaust tastes in my mouth.  I don't know.  I know I've got to find some electrical diagrams of this great machine.  There's one air leak directly behind the tank in the access compartment under the drivers feet.  It's an electrical sensor, but this entire air system just didn't blow air craplessly and it still held 40lbs after 45 minutes.  Not spectacular, I know, but not horrible either.  All the house systems work so far.  So let me know if I'm screwing up charging into this one, but for some reason it just feels right.

Thanks all
Mike

Mike,

Your welcome at my house anytime. GMC's rule.

To really test it out you need to move it around a little and see if the leveling valves as well as if the other air componets work.

But holding some air is always a good sign.

That leak under the driver sounds like a low pressure sensor...Luke has them...

Rebuild kits are unavailable, or so I have been told

Buy it, Work on it, Love it, Pour Money into it.

Don't worry about what works and doesn't work.. you'll get to those problems soon enough.

If it's what fit's you and you fit it, you'll have a great relationship for many, many, many years...

Buses, BTB are like boats... they are all female, and what does a female do best? Rule Men!

Good Luck,

Dallas
