Title: Flat plate heat exchangers....
Post by: Iver on January 31, 2008, 01:34:21 AM
Just wondering if anyone has used a flat plate heat exchanger?  I was thinking of using one between the hot water from my diesel furnace and the engine coolant.
They are available in many sizes on the "E"place and are priced between 85-125.oo.
   Anyone tried this setup?

I have one for domestic hot water. It's about 5X7X2" and will heat the water from 60* to over 130* continuosly with the Pro-Heat.  Donn

I'm using a 100,000 btu flat plate heat exchanger between my house system and the bus system.  The exchanger extracts *almost* all of the heat and transfers it to the other coolant stream.  It works extremely well.

i have one -- it uses my hot water from the genset to heat my hand sink and shower water, i have one of those small electric under counter heater for water that "could" get consumed from the kitchen sink.  I was concerned about cross containination in the event the plate exchanger failed to the domestic side ... i considered using a antifreeze in the genset that was not toxic -- but just found it easier to go this route ... i have 165 gals of fresh water on board you can take a shower for as long as you desire -- just have to have the genset on -- it gets hot in about 3-5 mins ... works great -

I am familiar with hydraulic oil coolers.  I do not know about water heat exchangers for domestic water.  A few basic questions, will the water being heated become the same temp as the heat source?  Is the water being heated continue as long  as heat source is available?  What is the time frame for heated water from exchanger?  Does heat exchanger need to be in enclosure?  Are the heat exchangers made of different material because of type of fluids?  Is a large size better than a smaller size?  Any advantage to having 2 units in series?  What is difference between 20 plates to a 60 plates exchanger?  This looks like a good RV product.
Just seeking information.  Thanks a lot, Frank
